C’est Paris!
When you’re in Europe, you block out your American idea of what a "good" hotel is because in Europe that standard is just lower...much lower. But what you’re never prepared for is the reality of just how low it can go... The staff at Montholon is arguably the most underwhelmed group of non-workers ever. The room at street level is just like sleeping at an Indy500 pit stop. The row of motorcycles out the window should be an indication I suppose. Also, (OF COURSE!) there is no air conditioning so in the summer it’s like Calcutta with motorcycles so you close the window only to shower in your own perspiration. Moving to the top floor is like moving into a starving artist’s studio, with 15 foot ceilings and 15 feet of floor space. I fully expected a rat to greet me at the door. The beds are at least 50 years old, the bathroom is 100 years old with calcium stalagmites growing from the bottom. The elevator fits 2 people comfortably and worrying about it’s chugging and rattling is the least of your problems because when you discover your key doesn’t work, the main desk tells you, "Oui, cette cle est perfect!!!" But it’s not. You wait for maintenance, but of course he’s taking a cigarette break in winding staircase that gives you vertigo just to peer down. But of course, Montholon is the RIGHT price and is a hop away from the main train station terminal. So if you’re not afraid of vermin, noise, sleeping on what feels like a large piece of toast, VIVE PARIS, VIVE LE MONTHOLON!
Traveler's tip on local attractions
Montholon is within walking distance to Sacre Cour. It is also across the street from a lovely brasserie that is simply charming. The park across the street is nice. You can walk to everything from here but it’s a haul of course. Best location from the train station though.
