Fantastic hotel
Setting, location, food, service, beauty of hotel grounds -- all spectacular. The management bent over backwards to change my room reservation and be as helpful as possible -- very impressive management overall.

Location near the old city gate is wonderful for walking to everything.

In the heart of Malta
The pool, lobby, and common areas of Hotel Phonecia were quite nice, although the rooms could use some updating. Very nice new bathroom, however. The Hotel has an outstanding location overlooking the harbor, and adjacent to the city gate of old Valetta and the very important bus terminal. I definitely recommend Hotel Phonecia purely for its great location.
Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks
There are several netcafes a few blocks away in old Valletta which are far cheaper than the one in the hotel.

A nice city sanctuary
Le Meridien was an oasis of tranquility and sophistication to escape the nearby bustle of center city Valetta. It is, as they say, a beautiful "old dame" so its strengths are location, beautiful ball room, lounge area, and bar, and old world feel. It proved romantic enough for me to propose to my girlfriend and then smoke a cigar on the terrace. A couple drawbacks include a smallish pool (although nice) and barely enough pool chairs for everyone. If your vacation is all about hanging by the pool, this is probably not the best choice. We picked it as a place from which to see historical and cultural sites mainly and then went to Gozo to lounge by the pool more.
