Authentic Tuscan Experience

This hotel is indeed a renovated, primitive castle. The extensive grounds are planted with rows of olive trees and are lovely for walking and overlooking the patchwork quilt of Tuscany below. The hotel serves a breakfast to all and will prepare a luncheon with advance arrangements. The lack of dinner might be a problem for some. Shrove is barely a village, with just a tiny store with the most basics of basics. There are 2 local eating establishments of a very casual nature with reasonably priced and decent food. Getting to a real restaurant requires night driving on challenging mountain roads. The wonderful nearby walled city of Monteriggioni has 2 or 3 restaurants open for lunch and dinner; it is only 5 - 10 minutes away. We overheard the desk having a problem obtaining a taxi for an older couple who did not want to drive at night. The location is very remote. Our small apartment was comfortable and very clean. Decoration is rustic; comfortable but not deluxe. We could have cooked if we wished. The town of Colle di val d’Elsa is only 10-15 minutes away but we got lost 4 times there. San Giamignano is about 30 minutes away and Siena about 30 minutes, so it is well located for travelers who are comfortable on the roads in a rental car. A car is a must. We loved it and wish we had built in more "down" time to enjoy it’s relaxing atmosphere. There is a simple pool with an incredible view.

Not Impressed

First problem is that the hotel is very difficult to find, but once you overcome that hurdle, it was not what we expected. No airconditioning in the bedrooms and no screens in front of the windows so the room was filled with bugs. In addition, like very common in Italy, the beds were very hard. Stayed in five other hotels throughout Italy and this one was the worst.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

Tuscany is a great place to visit. Siena, Monterigionne, the vineyards etc. We can highly recommend visiting Tuscany, but suggest staying at another hotel.

Gorgeous views, great location

We were lucky enough to get a suite with "kitchen" and separate bedroom, and private patio. Bathroom clean, yet small. Modern ammentities could use an upgrade (mattress, shower), but overall very satisfied with our the 7 nights we stayed. Very friendly and helpful staff as well. Most comfortable room we stayed in on our 3 week trip through Italy and Greece.

Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay

You have to rent a car to stay here and to get the most out of your trip. Great access to all of Chianti region and close access to highway to get to Florence, Rome, and other parts of Italy.
