What to expect: Formerly a convent, the site of the Husa Oriente has operated as a hotel since 1842. The marble-floor lobby offers a calm retreat to guests, mainly tourists, after the bustle of La Rambla. Complimentary newspapers are on offer, and large windows look out over the famous boulevard.
Amenity highlights: The hotel has a conference room for business guests planning meetings in the centre of Barcelona. The ground floor bar has tables inside, but the tables and chairs outside are the main attraction, sitting right on La Rambla boulevard.
Insider tip: Although Barcelona is best known for its culture, architecture and industry, it also has decent sandy beaches right on the edge of the city centre. The seafront areas underwent a massive clean-up for the 1992 Olympics, and offer guests an escape from the oppressive summer heat of the city. The nearest beach is Barceloneta, 1.5 kilometres away.
