Nice hotel, perfect location in Madrid
We were at this hotel for 8 days in May and found it to be the perfect location for sightseeing in Madrid. The Sol/Seville Metro stops are close, also there are many restaurants/fast food places (even KFC, Burger King, McDonalds) nearby. The El Corte Ingles dept. store is also convenient (it has everything, including a supermarket for food). The rooms are nicely furnished with bright colors (we had a courtyard room at the back, which was very quiet), and are a good size for European hotels. The only drawbacks were the beds, HARD as a rock (but we understand this is pretty basic to all hotels in Madrid), and also, the AC did NOT work well, so we left the window open at night. Loved the SHOWER though! The hotel personnel were very friendly and helpful.
Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay
We didnt use the hotel restaurant (too pricey) but instead bought breakfast pastries/yogurt and stored them in the minibar. Got a carafe of coffee/cream each a.m. to go with (went downstairs to get it ourselves). Instead of hotel restaurant, eat AT nearby VIPS restaurant, good food, low prices. And for tapas/paella, go to Plaza Mayor!

Maria Elena Palace
The location is great, but the rooms are not being maintained properly. For example, the bedspread had visible stains, the walls had many scratches, and the layout of the bathroom was very strange. In addition, my room was way too small for a property thats rated 4 stars.
