romantic getaway
The entrance to this beautiful 18th century manor house is a long pathway with over-arching trees, and as we walked along it, we fell under the spell of the legend of the forbidden lovers Pedro and Ines. We stayed in the palace part of the hotel. Our room was spacious and comfortable with a garden view. The breakfast was delicious and plentiful: fresh fruit, fresh juice, strong coffee, many breads and cheeses, yogurt, bacon, eggs, sweets and champagne. Breakfast is served in a light-filled room overlooking the large, sparkling blue outdoor pool and the garden beyond. The spa is simple by American standards but offers a nice, warm indoor lap pool and a clean Turkish bath and dry sauna at no cost to the guests. The gardens were splendid and offered us a delightful stroll. We did not dine in the Michelin-rated restaurant, preferring to walk into town for more family-style dining. The hotel is across the Mondego River from old Coimbra, so be prepared to walk beyond Rick Steves recommended tour, or take a cab, if you stay here.

Wonderful stay in a fabulous hotel
This hotel is right in the center of Coimbra yet it has a private park (garden plus woods) that makes it surprisingly quiet for its urban setting, even if Coimbra is a fairly peaceful city. It is within walking distance to the historic center of Coimbra and to a couple of stunning medieval monasteries. It is a charming and comfortable historic hotel, filled with the memories of the tale of Pedro and Ines, the Portuguese version of Romeo and Juliet. She is said to have been killed there 7 centuries ago. The staff was most gracious. The sort of friendly people you find in countryside hotels. The spa looks amazing (a modern contrast to the atmosphere of the old palace) but I did not use it. Had a fantastic meal though at their Michelin star restaurant.

Romantic quinta next to downtown area
There are two completely different parts to this hotel. The old Quinta mansion that has been converted to this very nice boutique hotel set in the middle of a garden. They extract all they can from the tragic love story of Prince Dom Pedro and Ines de Castro that unfolded in the quinta with paintings and drawings on the walls, references in the menu, romantic couples specials in the spa, etc The second part is a normal modern hotel with nothing particularly special, though I must say I did enjoy the indoor pool and sauna. Besides the setting, there is an excellent restaurant at the hotel (one Michelin star). We had a meal as good as some of the best we have had on our stays in Paris.
