Keep your options open
We just returned from a 10 night stay in St. Maarten. The first 2 nights were at Captain Oliver’s Resort. The resort is away from all city life, but we knew that. It has a restaurant and bar on site and a few other places within walking distance. It is a bit difficult to find and extremely hilly in this area. You must have a car to get around. Upon check in, we were taken to our room by the front desk person who brought a can of room freshener with her. The room had a nice marina view but smelled extemely bad. We brought our luggage in and went for a walk around the marina. When returning, we passed through the lobby and were told we needed to move to another room because the one they gave us was already promised to someone else the next day. We obliged since we hadn’t unpacked but were surprised. We were given a room that did not face the marina this time however it did smell much better and was cleaner except for the black mold on the ceiling. The resort staff were extremely nice and the restaurant/bar had delicious food.
Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks
You can get a room at a reasonable price here and the resort itself is very pretty but away from everything. Our issue was mostly in the cleanliness of the room.

our 3rd time and coming back
my wife and i stayed this year for 2 weeks and had a great time. the neiborhood seems safe for morning and evening walks, the hotel is reasonably quiet with some activity down at the docks. good people and good entertainment. staff was very helpful if needed, but it was our 3rd time so not much was needed. it is not a major highrise resort, but nice comfortable bungalo style rooms. if we don’t find a place for the month next year we will be back. a rent a car is a must.
