Basic but good
This is a basic, no frills European hotel. It is clean and mostly well-maintained. Rooms are about average in size, some appear fairly spacious for European hotels (saw a few others when doors were open during cleaning). Plumbing worked quit well and is pretty modern. The decor is rather dull and a little worn; it could use updating. You have to walk a few blocks to find a group of restaurants (Neue Grossmarkt) and the subway is about 5 minutes away. Not an exciting location, not very closest to central attactions, but not that far by the subway. Neighborhood is clean, quiet and safe. Breakfast was quite good, but was an extra charge and not cheap. Overall, I would recommend the Holstenwall.
Traveler's tip on local attractions
Central attractions are not that close, but it is about 20 minutes to the heart of the city. You do have to walk about 4-5 blocks to find a wider selection of restaurants.

Perfect European feel
If not for the roof being replaced and the need for the building to be covered in scaffolding, this would have been a perfect stay for us. The beds having no legs made them a little difficult to get out of in the morning, but all-in-all the hotel was beautiful. The hotel is located very close to the nightlife of the Reeperbahn, and in the other direction it was close to a wonderful neighborhood center with great pubs.

You need to be stretched for cash to put up with this, but its generally okay.
Good breakfast for extra money. The lobby feels like some dubious neighborhood in New York City. Crazy electronic lock system on hotel doors barely worked at all in my case. Reasonable deal on 24 hours worth of fast internet in the room. I asked if I could check out an hour-and-a-half later than Noon (check-out on a Friday). Answer, No. How about just one hour? Nope. Brought back the old days of back-packing. Breakfast room doubles as a popular bar downstairs; might be a good place to "meet people" -- didnt check it out in detail, though.
Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay
I asked a taxi driver for a German restaurant and he came up with something good - wish I still had the name for you (and for me!). No "German" restaurant in hotel neighborhood, though; they tried (in vain) to send me to some Italian place. You can get to airport from hotel by train and bus with little difficulty.
