Boutique hotel in Old Town Zurich

Hotel Wellnberg is a well located boutique hotel in Zurich. The staff were friendly and helpful. The location was great as it was only a 10 minute walk to most key destinations. If you are arriving by train the hotel is only a 10 minute walk from the train station or a quick tram ride away - no need to pay for a taxi if you don’t have too much luggage.

Awesome Old European City

I planned an overnight lay over in Zurich on my way back to the US as this is one of my favorite European cities. I last stayed at the Wellenburg 6 years ago and was happy to be able to find the hotel on-line. The hotel is situated in the old part of Zurich where the streets are essentially closed to motorist and are very narrow and filled with entertainment. Getting to the hotel can be tricky as I have experienced some taxi’s having a difficult time but it is just a short walk from the main train station and over the river. Once you find the beginning of the old part of Zurich (look for the Starbucks) you simply walk 1/4 mile down a cobble stone road and you will see the Wellenburg in a square that often has activities. The hotel is clean but is not as comfortable as typical American hotels. There is no air conditioning in the rooms and the hotel always feels hot. Opening the windows is a must but can be loud as a result of all of the activies surrounding the hotel. Hopefully, you will be out having fun and not spending much time in the room. The hotel still has the old fashion keys with a 5 lb weight attached. The main door locks around 11. I was a bit embarrassed to ring the bell at 3am but was greeted warmly by the receptionist. I would recommend staying in this very old hotel and neighboorhood for a unique experience.

I highly recommend the Splendid American Piano Bar down the small alley next to the hotel. I have been there three times and am amazed on how much fun this place is and how easy it is to speak with the people in the bar. My last visit I was alone and still had a ball. It is a complete international crowd who knows every word of every classic American song. The last visit had a slightly older crowd but overall it is a well mixed crowd and by 11, I knew half of the bar (and I am not super social). Be careful - drinks are priced similar to Manhattan and even a bottle of water cost as much as a beer ~$12.

Would go back

The staff were very helpful. We arrived from the US, and though we could not check in early, they took our bags and they were in our room when we returned at 2PM. If you have a car it is restricted access to the hotel and parking is several blocks away. Beds were very comfortable. I don’t know if it’s air conditioned but we were there in September and there was a fan in the room and we were quite comfortable. Breakfast was great. The neighborhood has many nice restaurants and the public square outside is quite active. Just a short walk to the Limmat, Bahnhofstrasse, and public transportation.

Traveler's tip on dining

The Apfelkammer is a charming, old restaurant nearby. We always had something interesting offered for lunch or dinner.

In the middle of the old city

Close to everything including the main train station (10-15 mins safe walk) They sell internet access cards. There is an extra charge daily of 2.5 swiss franks that was not included in the expedia price. Breakfast is very nice including all kinds of expresso! The room are really hot and small but very convenient. Over all no more than a 3 star but many nice little things (not sure if it justifies the extra price!)

Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay

get the 3 day city pass. It covers transportation to and from airport and free entarnce to almost all museums plus free transportation in the city. The train is very accurate but very confusing platforms compared to the rest of Europe

Centrally located

About half a mile from the train station along a street with many restaurants and clubs, the hotel offers a lot to visitors of Zurich. Near the lake front and the art museum, you can basically walk everywhere downtown. The hotel is modern inside and the rooms are comfortable, but small. Breakfast was very satisfying.

Perfect location

The Wellenberg had very accomodating staff and the location is perfect for restaurants and shopping.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

It was a little too warm for no AC. That may be a factor but is the perfect location

great hotel, great location

Decided to spend a little more and stay at the Wellenberg. totally worth it! Great breakfast with good variety. There is even a beautiful, quiet garden patio with a fountain where you can eat and have your morning coffee when weather permits. Rooms were simple, but clean. Comfy bed, bathroom was also great and included all the necessary toiletries and then some. There was even a towel warmer... talk about spoiling yourself. Can’t say enough about the location. Everything is super close in walking distance and the hotel is located in a pedestrian zone with lots of great restaurants, cafe’s and shops. You cant go wrong here!

Traveler's tip on nightlife

Zurich has swimming places around the lake and on the river which turn into bars, dance venues in the evening. Check out the "Barfussbar" at the Frauenbad on the Limmat River. Fun dancing, great bar, beautiful location... essentially an evening pool party and not "meat markety" at all. went by myself, had a great time! just know you have to take you shoes off..

Outside busy and noisy square.

Hotel was nice inside, but the only access to it was through a very busy and noisy square with many people, restaurants and strip clubs. If this is your scene, you’ve found the right place. If not, you might find some other place more quiet.

Traveler's tip on recreational activities

Take a trip to the Berner Oberland area.

Wellenberg

This hotel was chosen for location and price. Rooms were fine. Only drawback is the people noise from the walking street and plaza on which it fronts. It is a very lively area. The night club music on the ground floor, adjacent, on weekend nights was a loud beat. Breakfast buffet was up to par. Minimal lobby but there is a outside terrace away from the street on the 2nd floor. Many restaurants within a few blocks.

Great choice for Zurich

My husband and I really enjoyed our stay at the Wellenberg. It is in a great location, and we thought our room was very well-kept and comfortable. The hotel also has a very nice and private back patio which is a nice place to unwind late in the day. If you get a room with windows overlooking the courtyard, there is a nice buzz from people eating at the restaurants down below. This buzz may be unpleasant to some people, but when you close the windows, it was pretty soundproof. The only problem was some rowdy folks in the plaza over the weekend. Otherwise, everything was fantastic, clean, and comfortable.

Loved Zurich

The hotel is in a good location in the old part of town. It is within a short walking distance to the trains. The staff is very nice and helpful. It is very clean and beds were comfortable. Problems were that our room faced on the square and it was very noisy late into the night. The hotel is only about three or so blocks from the sexually oriented bars and shops and porn cinema. Even so I would stay here again but I would ask for a room NOT facing the street. The breakfast was very good.

Traveler's tip on recreational activities

You can take a day trip to Lake Lucerne. IWe highly recommend that. We left the hotel aroun 10 and were back by 5. We took the train there and then a boat to the base of Mt. Pilatus. Then by cog train up the mountain and the gondola down. The views are incredible.

Overall, Great!

Maybe this is commom but the bed did not have a top sheet. You can borrow an adaptor at the front desk if you need one.

Traveler's tip

Also, universal adaptors don’t work in Zurich. You need a more specialized adaptor. You can borrow one from the front desk if you need one

Great Place

This was a great place to stay other than the fairly rude young lady behind the reception counter. She was very short with customers every time I walked by. The hotel is close to everything you could want to see. Very clean and new with comfortable beds. I would recommend.

Good hotel, great location.

The Wellenburg is a lovely little hotel right in the heart of old towne. The staff was friendly, breakfast was fine, and rooms were decent sized for European standards. It can be loud if you sleep with the windows open, but when closed the noise is not bothersome. I would go back again.

Traveler's tip on dining

Some great restaurants literally steps away from the hotel. I would not recommend the fondue place, but the Itallian restaurant just across the street had fantastic food.

Good Value for Zurich

My sister and I stayed at this hotel on two seperate visits during a two week visit to see my Nephew. It seemed to be clean and in a convenient location. The furniture in both rooms was not as it appears in their brochure. The chairs were worn, the carpeting needs to be replaced, and the bed spreads were pink and dated. Large rooms with lots of windows for fresh air. Good breakfast buffet. Front desk was helpful in reserving a local tour. Request a room to the back of the hotel for a quiet night. Available WiFi, but expensive.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

2nd stop on the tram from the train station. Convenient location with close restaurants and only a block from the river. Convenient for walking in the old section of Zurich.

Great location, cozy and personal

Stayed at the Wellenberg Hotel 14-15 April 09, and truly enjoyed the value for money. Great breakfast, cozy backyard where you could eat in the morning sun, quiet but very central location in the Old Town of Zurich. Room was big and clean, but the doors could have been more soundproof. Could easily hear people walking and talking in the hallway. The hotel has personality and is definitely worth the money.

Traveler's tip on dining

Take a walk to the tram and head out to Restaurant LaSalle (5 stops) for the best cousine and coolest restaurant in town.

Small Nice Hotel at the Center

Hotel was very nice; clean, good service, good quality. It is also in a very good location, step out and you will find several restaurants, clubs bars etc. Several tram stops nearby. The only problem for us was the Zurich Festival. Because of our stay was during the festival, there was too much noise in the evenings and nights outside. Since the hotel is the at the center of the old town, most of the festival events started and ended here! The festival tent was also next to the hotel :-) So, when you are booking, check if there is a festival during your stay. Otherwise, I highly recommend this small, quality hotel.

Great Buy in Zurich

The Wellenberg Swiss Hotel was centrally located near the train station and the popular shopping street. Our large room was ready for us at 10:30 AM, which is an important feature for weary overnight travelers. The included breakfast was superb, with meat, cheeses, eggs and pastries. Excellent value.

Comfortable abode

Staff was friendly. I got there at about 9:30AM, but they checked me into the room right away. The location is great, walking distance from the main train station. Room was quite small, but comfortable. Overall a good value for the money.
