What to expect: Floor-to-ceiling windows flood the patterned marble floors of the lobby with light. The concierge and reception desks lie to the left, backed by a large painting of a New Zealand landscape. A mix of business and leisure guests, many from Australia, relax on sofas by a fireplace or make use of the restaurant and bar, which lie just beyond. A curving staircase leads to conference areas on the 1st floor.

Insider tip:The beach town of Sumner started life as a holiday resort, but has now become a suburb of Christchurch. It is well worth travelling 30 minutes from the CBD to Sumner, where the hillsides are dotted with holiday houses and prime real estate. Restaurants and cafés provide a village feel, while in summer volleyball and surfing make the beach a lively venue. There are superb views of the coast and city.

The conference centre at Rydges Christchurch offers an Executive Boardroom and seven meeting rooms, six of which have natural light. A dedicated business centre provides a range of secretarial and business services. Both wireless and high-speed Internet access are available.

Business centre: A computer terminal provides high-speed Internet access (surcharge). There are also a printer, fax machine, and photocopier. Secretarial and other business services are available, and laptop computers and mobile phones may be hired on request.

Internet access: High-speed and wireless Internet access are available in all conference areas; the wireless zone covers lobby and restaurant. Wireless Internet access costs NZD15 (AUD13–14) per 30 minutes with a pre-paid card. A computer terminal in the business centre and two further terminals in the lobby provide high-speed Internet access, which costs NZD2 (AUD$1.50–2) per 10 minutes. Conference/function room(s): The Canterbury Room is 327 square metres in size, and can host up to 380 people theatre style or 280 people classroom style. It can be divided into a number of separate areas, ranging in size from 91–281 square metres. The Marlborough Room covers 52 square metres and can hold 40 people theatre style or 20 classroom style. The 86-square-metre Otago Room can accommodate 100 people theatre style, while the 55-square-metre Southland Room can host up to 50 people. The Executive Boardroom, at 35 square metres, accommodates a maximum of 12 persons. All rooms, except the Otago Room, have natural light. Audio-visual equipment includes speakerphones, multi ports, LCDs, data projectors, and video-conferencing equipment.

Guests at Rydges Christchurch have complimentary access to the adjacent Clarendon Towers gymnasium, which has a full range of exercise equipment, including a sauna and full-service health spa. Bicycles may be hired through reception for a surcharge. Note that cycling is an easy way to get around this flat city, with many designated cycle lanes, especially in the northwest of the city.

Hagley Park, which starts 500 metres from Rydges Christchurch, offers tennis and lawn bowling clubs, cycling, jogging, a children’s playground, and a fitness course. Punting on the Avon River (just across the road) is an iconic Christchurch pastime. Mountain biking is offered from the top of the Christchurch Gondola on Mt. Cavendish, 7 km away. Other city activities include ice skating, skydiving, and windsurfing. Swimming is available at Centennial Pool, one km away. There are numerous golf courses near the city, including the scenic Terrace Downs High Country Resort, where green fees are NZD115 (AUD105), and the Clearwater Golf Club, where fees are NZD125 (AUD114). Fees subject to change without notice. Horse riding and mountain biking are available in the Port Hills. The three main beaches nearest Christchurch are Sumner Beach, New Brighton Beach, and Taylor's Mistake, all of which have good surfing. There are several ski fields within two hours’ drive of the city.
