Nice view of mountains
Thanks to the previous people who reviewed this hotel, I decided to pay the extra $15 a night and get a mountain view room. Definitely worth the extra cost. If you like mountains, the view from Rydges is fabulous! It is a bit of a walk, about 10 minutes at a good pace, to the town center, but it is a good location right on the lake.
Traveler's tip on local attractions
Definitely go to Milford Sound if you get to Queenstown. I took the nakedbus.com trip and saved some money. I also did the Sunrise Balloon trip. It was incredible! It was expensive, but for me, worth it. However, he can only go on days its not too windy or rainy, so thats about 50% of the time.

nice lobby, shoddy room
The staff was friendly, the lobby was nice, but the small ugly room had burned carpet and a torn shower curtain. I heard that the lake view rooms were better, but I bought the cheapo room.

This is the problem with the star system
What counts for me, when grading a hotel, are the in-room amenities. I dont necessarily care if there is one or two bars, a restaurat, concierge service. If its 4 or 5 stars Im demanding a lot of the rooms themselves. In this case the hotel as such has a great restaurant and a nice bar. The location is ok etc etc. The room however wasnt exactly great and theres also a lot of small stupid mistakes like no chair for the desk. Whats the point of a large desk, that uses a fair bit of the rooms space, if theres no chair to use it with? Even though they state that they have a surcharge for the internet usage, I still think its ridiculous to charge around 30 NZD for 24h. If you pay for a hotel in the 4-5 star range youd expect MUCH more from the rooms as such.
Traveler's tip on recreational activities
The rafting challenge was great fun. The Shotover river was a bit to calm in February but it was still great fun for a first timer. Shotover jetboating was also good but if Id have to chose, the rafting was better.
