Comfortable hotel
Right in Sultanehammet a stones throw from the blue mosque, and reasonable eateries. Just make sure your taxi driver knows where theyre going.

An Istanbul Gem
The Sarnic (pronounced Sarnich, which is Turkish for cistern), is a lovely little hotel in a quaint little area of Sultanahmet. My room in the back looked out directly on the Blue Mosque. And, yep, at 4:45 its wakey, wakey with the call to prayer from the minaret. It really doesnt matter what proximity you are to a mosque, if youre this side of living, youll hear it. They were remodeling the rooftop dining while I was there, but it was just finishing up as I was leaving and its looks very nice. They also have a restaurant downstairs with a complimentary and varied breakfast buffet. I am most grateful to the desk staff for solving a problem that I was having contacting the purveyor of a day trip to Ephesus. It required Turkish, and I had none. And everything worked out very well. Its within walking distance also to Haghi Sofia, Topkapi, and the Yerebatan Sarnici (from which the neighborhood and hotel derive their name, I think). In the other direction you can walk to the Kumkapi area and sample some really excellent fish.
Traveler's tip on shopping
I cant stress this enough: Decide BEFORE you visit Istanbul if you really need a rug. And if you do, what is the absolute top price you will pay. Commit this to memory. Otherwise, you may purchase a rug you neither need nor afford. Iif you do, you will learn an excellent lesson that you can pass on to others. As I am passing it on to you. So to be polite, just tell them what I told everyone AFTER I bought rug on the first day: "No thanks, I ALREADY bought one." Then walk quickly away.
