Location and Service
The top floor restaurant of the hotel has a beautiful view of Edinburgh Castle, and its location places it ideally. Right across the street is a plethora of pubs and excellent eateries with not a bad meal in sight. A very short walk gets you to the Royal Mile for lots of history, shopping, eating and, of course, whiskey. A slightly longer walk brings you to public transit, the national gallery, the Museum of Scotland, beautiful churches and other urban scenery. The neighborhood itself has cobbled streets and beautiful old stone buildings and feels very peaceful, except Friday and Saturday nights when the pubs bubble over with activity. The hotels restaurants have excellent wines and a diverse, high quality menu. Its staff goes beyond efficient and competent into the friendly and proactively helpful. If I ever get back to Edinburgh, Ill attempt to repeat this experience.
Try the local cuisine. The fish, mutton and sausage rate with the best Ive tasted.

Excellent stay
The room was very spacious and well appointed. We were upgraded to a view of Edinburgh Castle -- so impressive! Great location in Grassmarket: Edinburgh Castle was just up the street;the hop on/hop off bus stopped right across the street, and the oldest pub in Scotland, The White Hart, was there too. Didnt try the in-hotel restaurant or the bar, but it looked classy and was nice to know we could have had dinner in if the weather got ugly. Wed go back in a minute.
Traveler's tip on local attractions
I know its standard tourist fare, but try to spend more time rather than less at the Edinburgh Castle. The free guided tour gave us the incentive to really explore all the facets of this very, very old and meaningful place. Did you know prisoners of war were housed there, including Americans during our Revolutionary War?
