Spacious and comfortable!
I booked this hotel last minute and was so satisfied. Hotel is located on a quite street. The rooms were large. Great bathroom with stand up shower that was roomy. Breakfast was average with no hot items but they had coffee/tea, pasteries, breads, cereal, and fruit (would not spend extra on the breakfast). Staff was friendly and helpful. Location is fabulous. Restaurants and shopping are about 5 minute walk across the bridge. Rome is a great waking city and you can easily get to all the main sites from the location. There is no train station is nearby. We took a taxi that cost 15 euros to get from the main train station to the hotel. Will stay here again

Outstanding Experience
The Hotel Dei Mellini has it all! The staff is extremely friendly and goes out of their way to assist the guests. They are fluent in English and happy to humor the tourists by communicating at an elementary level of Italian. Arriving 5 hours early our luggage was locked away securely so we could start seeing the sites. A map was provided and reviewed for best routes, transportation, and walking time. They also recommended local restaurants including Vitos...outstanding! The room by European standards was huge with a separate bathroom, entryway, and walk-in closet. The hotel has the largest elevators we found in our 17 day tour. The bedding and bath amenities were first rate. Location is extremely central allowing an easy walk west to the Vatican area or east towards colosseum/trevi/etc. We will definitely return to this hotel for future stays!
Traveler's tip
The rules of the road in Italy: there are no rules of the road. It is a free for all with every inch of street, sidewalk, and median fair game for pedestrians, motorist and Vespas alike!

Nice Hotel in Quiet Neighborhood
June 2009 stay for 3 days. Hotel and its staff were excellent. Location requires a 10 minute walk to transportation, but still centrally located enough on the Vatican side of the Tiber River to be good, especially for sightseeing.

Away from the tourist crowd
Residential area of Rome away from the tourist crowd. Right in the middle of Rome - cross the bridge and you are in Piazza Popolo, walk the other way and you are close to Vatican. Bus stop to Coloseum just round the corner. Very clean rooms and wonderful breakfast with all sorts of delicious cakes. Smiling service.. Would definitely go there again.

Great Location/Great Staff
We spent 6 terrific nights in Rome at the end of our trip to Italy. Initially we had concerns with the booked reservation since we never received a confirmation from Expedia that the room was booked as we did the other 5 hotels we stayed at ( no fault of Expedia but a lakc of communicaiton from the hotel). But my secretary secured the confirmation for us a few days before we arrived and the hotel was able to pick us up at the airport where we returned our car rental (for a fee of 75 Euros) but well worth it since I had not been in Italy for quite a while. The staff was very friendly and extremely helpful booking a tour or two for us but the location was such that we walked to many of the places we wanted to see. They also sent us to some great restaurants in the area. We were about a half hour walk to St. Peters and the Vatican and a stones throw from Piaza Cavour. The room was very clean, great bed and bath and the bar was open for a long period of time. I was able to get a bucket of ice every night with no problem from the staff. Breakfast was fairly typical of the comp breakfast throughout Italy but you could order fried eggs with bacon for 7 Euros which I did a couple of mornings (eggs sure tasted good!!) All in all a terrific 4 star hotel in a quiet part of Rome yet close enough to see some great attractions that we walked to. Also was able to get a ride back to the airport for 45 Euros. I would recommend this hotel for any traveler.
Traveler's tip on dining
Go to Vitos Trattoria and grill. Incredible veal dish called "a slice of one year old calf" The grill guy was named Flavio and he expertly cut the veal off a larger piece, pounded it and seasoned it with salt, pepper and olice oil and grilled it to perfection. My wife and I love to cook and eat and we were so taken by the quality of the food here that we went their 3 times!! A five minute walk from the hotel.

Avoid
Air conditioning was turned off and room was on a breezway where the smoking guests went to smoke. They were permitted to stay there till midnight talking and smoking all of which was smelt and heard in the rooms which had to keep thier windows open because of the lack of air. Hotel staff was anything but concerned.

Second trip to dei Mellini - as good as the first.
The Dei Mellini Hotel is our favorite place to stay in Rome. It is comfortable, modern, and has an excellent staff and concierge, in a less crowded, quieter area of the city, tucked a block from the Tiber, and several very pleasant outdoor cafes and short doors away from the local police station. (though unless youre looking for it, the small station blends nearly unseen into the local architecture.) Though you may not need the extra sense of security as you walk dark streets after dinner, the staff reminds that theres little if any crime in the vicinity of the hotel. As a tourist, thats always a plus. A European style breakfast is complimentary. Theres a lovely roof garden with a solarium for sunbathing in warm weather. It is a nice place to imbibe cheese and wine and watch the sunset. So if youre looking for a modern, yet smaller sized hotel with excellent service and a good location, you have my endorsement.

Very Nice
Overall Im very satisfied. Positives; the rooms are very quiet (as if its a cement wall between the rooms). I couldnt hear anyone around me. The location is great. Within easy walking distance to the spanish steps and trevi. And all the other attractions, food and shopping can be walked to as well. The rooms are clean and the breakfast is very good. The negatives: its showing a little bit of its age in the wall coverings, floors and fabric of the chair. The bed consisted of two beds pushed together and there were indents on each side with a rise in the mattress between. The desk/chair is just a straight-backed chair and small desk. So dont plan to work there very long. The internet is 15 euro per 24 hr. The rooftop is very small and theres no view because of the adjacent buildings. About all you can do up there is sun or have a drink that you bring with you there. It has room for about 6 or 8 people total. If youre going to see the sights and want a comfortable place to stay, this is a good option. It has the feel and ammenties comparable to a 10 yr old holiday inn in the states. But I dont know a lot about the other hotels in Rome, so this may be a great option comparable to the others.

Surprisingly good location
This was our first trip to Rome and I was a little concerned that the hotels location on the west bank of the Tiber might be a problem. In fact we were only a short, 10 min. walk to the Spanish Steps and no more than 30 min to the Coliseum, our furthest destination. The staff was very friendly, helpful and conversant in English. They accomodated all our requests. The facility itself was clean, modern and comfortable though compact. A/C worked well in hot weather. We enjoyed the breakfast. The hotel overall was consistent with my expectation of a US 4 star hotel.
Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks
Find a small grocery store and stock up on Cokes, snacks, water, etc. We paid as much as 4.5 Euro for a Coke at a stand in touristy areas vs 1.5 Euro in a small grocery store and 2 Euro in a pizzaria.

Made the right choice
We looked at many different Rome hotels before choosing the Dei Mellini. We made the right choice. The location is ideal -- a comfortable walk to the Spanish Steps or the Vatican and all sights in between. The hotel personnel were friendly, knowledgable and helpful. The room was clean and very quiet; the air conditioner in the room was superb; the beds were very comfortable; the water pressure in the shower was great and the breakfast each morning was not only extremely convenient but good. In addition, busses stop at the bottom of the street, theres a small grocery 1/2 block from the hotel, restaurants are nearby and a taxi to Termini (train station) takes less than 10 minutes. Cant wait to go back!

Excellent choice for families and couples
Very nice hotel with nice rooms and an ample breakfast. The hotel location is very convenient and safe. Front desk service is fantastic, breakfast service is very efficient cleaning staff does a great job but the bar/dining area service is extremely slow and inattentive. Our party of five stayed at the hotel in a double room and a triple for 4 days and will return soon
Traveler's tip
Bring comfortable shoes because you can walk easily to all tourist locations.

Very comfortable polished stay
We were totally satisfied and very impressed with our stay. The hotel staff was very professional and could not do enough to help us. The hotel was on an small street in a nice safe location close to the Vatican. Parking may be a problem, I did not have a vehicle there. Breakfast was superb every day, the lobby and rooms were polished and very trendy. Id go back in a minute.
Traveler's tip
Check with the hotel if you have a car for parking availability, tight street

Charming neighborhood hotel
My husband and I spent 3 nights at Hotel dei Mellini and very much enjoyed our time at this small, friendly hotel. Dei Mellini is on Romes "left bank" - meaning its on the same side of the river as Vatican City and across the river from Piazza del Popolo, Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, etc. These sites and others are reachable by foot however (15-20 minutes brisk walking), and in fact, if you like walking, this hotel is a great location for you. The neighborhood is not at all touristy. There are several wine bars and small cafes nearby; also food, wine, pastry and other kinds of shops. Riverfront is 2 blocks away; nearest bridge across, about 6 blocks. We had a large king-bed room with all the little extras (robes, minibar, turn-down service, etc.) and like the light-filled public areas of the hotel, it was attractively and comfortably furnished. The hotel provides a lovely breakfast (continental++)and theres a small lobby bar, but theres no restaurant. Front desk staff were super!

Great Location & Great Value
We made last minute online reservations and were very pleasantly surprised at both the quality of the hotel and the central location. Although located on the "Vatican" side of the river, it is just a couple easy walking blocks from a bridge that takes you right to the center of Rome. We had no problem walking to the Coliseum/Forum, Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona or St. Peters. One of the "triples" we booked was actually a very sweet "suite". Hotel is on a quiet, one-way street so even a front room is good. Only downside was that there was no operating ac, but March is cool enough with the window open. If it was August I might not feel that way. A definite endorsement for Hotel Dei Mellini!
Traveler's tip on local attractions
Pay the ten euros for a tour of the Coliseum & Palatine Hill. It gets you past the long entrance lines and you receive a great deal of info about both that you would have to pour through your guide book to get. Also, the walk up the Palatine is steep!

Great Hotel, but hard to find from subway . .
We were at the Hotel Dei Mellini in August 2007. Room was clean and spacious; A/C worked great. Hotel was in a quiet area (but being August, most of the nearby shops were closed). Fruit bowl awaited our arrival. Breakfast included cereals, danish, cheeses, fresh cut fruit, juices and coffee, etc. Hotel is across the river from the Spanish Steps and high end shopping district - all major attractions are within walking distance. Lots of good restaurants nearby. Front desk had english speaking personnel who were glad to help with directions and dinner reservations. We would definitely stay here again!
1. Take quick drying (sports type) shirts which can be washed and rinsed by hand; then hang to dry overnight; this will save you luggage space. 2. Grocery stores are hard to find but offer a great value for water, drinks and snacks to have on hand in the room. 3. Wear comfortable shoes! Forget fashion (Rome is all tourists anyway). Lots of walking so be prepared. . .

Great place in Rome
My husband and I took our first trip to Rome and chose this hotel based on the reviews, we were not dissapointed. The Hotel is located on the West side of the river and within walking distance of the many bridges that lead to the major monuments, we walked everywere and used the Metro, felt safe at all times and enjoyed our trip very much. I would use this Hotel again and recommend it to our family and friends. The staff spoke English and were helpful and friendly.
Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay
