Great location in Madrid
Only five minutes to Plaza de Sol on a pedestrian street, seven minutes to Plaza Mayor. One minute to Plaza Orient which is next to the Royal Palace. The Opera Metro stop is right outside, three stops to the Metro near the Prado and museum row. Very helpful English speaking staff Daniel on the front desk. Clean, basic, free Internet, over priced but huge bfast buffet. Ask for a higher floor to reduce noise as with all hotels. The upgraded rooms on floor 8 and 9 can be negotiated for some days and are worth for quiet and upgraded linens and space. 804 has a wrap around private balcony where you can sunbathe nude.
Traveler's tip on dining
Take a siesta and go out for dinner at 8:30. Matritum on Cava Alta or one of those streets south of Plaza Mayor has an incredible wine list and very interesting tapas and main entrees.

Hotel Opera: A great urban neighborhood
We loved the location- close to the Royal Palace, surrounding parks, the Royal Theater (Opera), many of Madrids principal plazas, and good cafes and restaurants. The room (a triple) was comfortable and had heavy blackout curtains to keep it quieter at night. You need that, because there is lots of street noise and lots of street repair going on. Staff was courteous. Special find was a Barclays bank ATM a block away that charged no fees and gave a great exchange rate (for Bank of America customers). No place to pull up a car, so not a great hotel to load or unload if traveling by auto.

Location! Location!
Staff was extremely helpful - even moved the 3 of us to a better room when it was discovered that the floor leading to our bathroom had buckled. Decor is modern, with clean lines - very updated. Wed stay here again in a minute!
Traveler's tip on local attractions
We got tickets to see the opera the day before the concert. And the King of Spain was in residence/at the concert! Visit the opera box office; you never know who you are going to see!
