Great location but not much else
Giving this place 2 1/2 stars is probably stretching things by at least a star and a half. The Kucera couldnt be better located. A stones throw away from the Sadova kolonada, the view from our fourth-floor window was spectacular... as long as we were looking outward! The exterior of the hotel may be "Art Nouveau style" as advertised. The interior, however is much closer to "Third-world rat-trap." You enter the hotel through a dingy hallway, and then head up a flight of faded carpet to an office marked "Secretariat", which passes for reception. If youre lucky, someone will actually be there. If youre really lucky, that someone will consider you a person worthy of their attention, and perhaps speak a world language of some kind. Key in hand, you can continue to plod up the central stairwell, past potted plants placed haphazardly on the stairs, or squeeze into a tiny elevator just big enough for two. Our "Category A" room was spacious - it even included a walk-in closet. And a bed. The "light decor" mentioned in the hotel writeup is undoubtedly in reference to the bare walls. Breakfast was very Eastern European. Though the restaurant may well have had a gold-inlaid ceiling, the poor lighting made it hard enough to make out the breakfast choices (a selection of cold meats and cheese, boiled eggs and cold cereal), let alone the ceiling decoration. A romantic hideaway its not... but if youre looking for a budget bed in a good location, Kucera could be your kind of place!
Traveler's tip on local attractions
The theater across the river from the Kucera seems to have a full schedule of performances at fairly reasonable prices. Be sure to pop over to to the box office to check out the lineup!
