Marlos
We stayed there at the 4 of July. The location is good. The service at the reception, also very good. But, related with the apartment, the room had a bad smell, the bathroom was durty. They say the the Hotel is going to have an upgrade, I hope it works!

Threadbare
This used to be a great hotel and could be again. The location is good. The service is almost nonexistant since there is only one person other than cleanup crew working there. The desk person doubles as car valet and bellhop. The carpet in our room was threadbare, the bathroom needed recalking and a general update. There is currently no restaurant service in the hotel so breakfast is a problem. Fortunately a new cafe had opened for breakfast a block down the street. Wait to stay here until a restaurant moves in and the place has undergone a restoration. It perhaps will be great again.

Lovely Old Hotel - old is the key word.
The Lafayette is a lovely old hotel built in the early 1900s. The lobby is small but kind of quaint with a small "grand" staircase leading to a life-size portrait of Lafayette. The hallway to our room smelled musty with the humidity; but what can you expect in New Orleans with an old hotel. The room did not smell and we had windows above the street level (4th floor) that opened to let in fresh air The staff was polite, friendly, efficient. The room was as clean as could be for an old hotel. Good location to everything with the St. Charles Streetcar line right outside. And its not that noisy! Rather charming to hear it pass! And its gone in 1/2 a minute. A good stay for a great price when compared with the others.
Traveler's tip on dining
The hotels restaurant was closed, but I was told is scheduled to reopen in November. They were working on it. A few small restaurants on the next block, but they close by 10 pm and are not open on the weekend. A couple of good small coffee/tee shops, one in front of the hotel and others on the block behind and to the side. Some closed on weekends. The walk to the French Quarter is about a mile and a half - not bad and you get to see the sights along the way.
