Not impressed with Glencastle--stay March, 2009
Our intent was to have an inexpensive place to stay for one night. It was different, to say the least. We had king room with a/c (which actually worked okay). Fridge we dont think had ever been cleaned--it was unbearable to open it. Mattress was like sleeping on a rock, and no remote for TV. Discovered the next morning (it was dark when we arrived) that hotel is next to boys juvenile center with razor wire and high fences. People in the community told us they thought this hotel had closed, so they were suprised we were able to stay there. Bathroom not very clean; ceiling in room had obviously been leaking and plaster coming down.
Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay
Make friends with one of the cab drivers, and investigate having them take you around the island for the day. Its well worth it, and youll get a local perspective with some interesting conversation. That and the zipline adventure were our favorite things.

Below average
The Glencastle is a budget hotel, and it is barely worth the low price you pay. t Regarding the room: the bath tub was half detached from the wall, we were left without water twice, the room walls are paper-thin. The rooms are kept clean, and this hotel is in a good location to move around the island. Hotel personnel were not helpful at all: they refused to let us do a phone call to a local cell phone and requested that we rent a prepaid cell phone to do that. Please note that we offered to pay for that single call. Hotel personnel would call taxi service for us, but the prices were always higher than the ones we were able to find by ourselves. Breakfast is expensive and very bad. You have to pay to use the safe that is in your room (you have to rent the lock).

The Jump Up in Gros Islet Friday night is a lot of fun, food and drinks are reasonably cheap, and its a quick ten minutes walk from the hotel. At the far south end of Rodney Bay beach, past the resorts, there is a shack where Marie and her sons serve some home-made food and drinks.

A good value for a night
We stayed a night at the hotel prior to going to our villa. The rate was very reasonable and I was pleased with the cleanliness and pleasant room. I would not want to spend a vacation but for an overnight it was great. There is a small pool which was clean. We did not eat breakfast but what we saw looked good.
