Kyoto Trip
I stayed at several 4 star and above hotels in Kyoto on business trips. I found the Okura to be the most convenient for central Kyoto, restaurants, subway lines and direct access to Kyoto Station. The rooms are very nice and roomy and everything you could want for travel for the price. Booking on Expedia I found had the best prices. There is also a subway station in the lower level of the hotel, making it very convenient, you do not need to go across the street to the station. Only complaint is there is not wireless, instead there is a cable, but is very short and makes you have to stay at the desk to use the computer.
There are several nice western style restaurants and many very good Japanese restaurants along the river close by, within walking distance.

extraordinary service and facility
while the room size was a bit small, the service and comfort was extraordinary, down to bathroom amendities, TOTO toilet, pajamas, shopping and eateries at basement 1 and 2 levels, lobby service unbelievable, pricey buffet breakfast but actually worth every penny because of the array and top quality of the food. Location excellent, 2 blocks from beautiful walking canal paths, across the street from the City Hall plaza (vendors), and surrounded by shops, restaurants and shopping arcades.
The Miho Art Museum is an hours ride out of Kyoto but worth the trip as it was designed by I.M. Pei and is a piece of artwork in and of itself, approached from the parking lot through a fantastic tunnel dug through a low hill behind which sits the museum. Wonderfully laid out, broad steps, lots of light, and great views from every window, with a solarium- like garden cafe for coffee and light sandwiches.
