Kyoto Trip

I stayed at several 4 star and above hotels in Kyoto on business trips. I found the Okura to be the most convenient for central Kyoto, restaurants, subway lines and direct access to Kyoto Station. The rooms are very nice and roomy and everything you could want for travel for the price. Booking on Expedia I found had the best prices. There is also a subway station in the lower level of the hotel, making it very convenient, you do not need to go across the street to the station. Only complaint is there is not wireless, instead there is a cable, but is very short and makes you have to stay at the desk to use the computer.

There are several nice western style restaurants and many very good Japanese restaurants along the river close by, within walking distance.

extraordinary service and facility

while the room size was a bit small, the service and comfort was extraordinary, down to bathroom amendities, TOTO toilet, pajamas, shopping and eateries at basement 1 and 2 levels, lobby service unbelievable, pricey buffet breakfast but actually worth every penny because of the array and top quality of the food. Location excellent, 2 blocks from beautiful walking canal paths, across the street from the City Hall plaza (vendors), and surrounded by shops, restaurants and shopping arcades.

The Miho Art Museum is an hour’s ride out of Kyoto but worth the trip as it was designed by I.M. Pei and is a piece of artwork in and of itself, approached from the parking lot through a fantastic tunnel dug through a low hill behind which sits the museum. Wonderfully laid out, broad steps, lots of light, and great views from every window, with a solarium- like garden cafe for coffee and light sandwiches.

A Beautiful and Conveniently Located Hotel

Fabulous facilities. Courteous and highly competent staff. World class/reasonably priced Buffet Breakfast. Within easy walking (or short cab ride) distance of dining and shopping facilities. Make certain to take in the river walk! Overall...a highly enjoyable experience!

Great Locations

We were centrally located to the many sites we wanted to see in Kyoto. Also, close to Kyoto station. Nothing was too far away. Hotel was clean, staff friendly, and helpful.

Very Nice

We stayed four nights and received a lovely room and great service. Couch turned into a comfortable bed for our son who was with us for 2 of the nights (3500 yen extra each night - quite reasonable)

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

Location was good but not close to Kyoto station (1200 yen for cab ride- no tipping) Much less for subway which was located under the hotel but a change of lines is necessary.

Outstanding hotel

Everything in the room was excellent. The only shortcoming would be that the TV had no English channels of any kind but Kyoto has enough diversions. No complaints of any kind.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

The hotel is well located blocks away from everything.

Customer Service like no other!

My sister and I were very pleased with our room in every respect and the level of customer attentivenss was unexpected. Hotels of this caliber in the U.S. have alot to learn. We are now spoiled forever! Staying here was a wonderful respite to the rainy, hot and humid weather in Kyoto during our trip.

Traveler's tip

The hotel has an underground connection from the subway. Very handy during the rainy season.

Hotel Okura was terrific!

We traveled to Kyoto with our four year old daughter, and were a bit worried about how she would fare in Japan. The Hotel Okura was wonderful ... they left a tiny pair of slippers in our room for her, each day the housekeeping staff would leave her a little origami crane, and the concierge was incredibly helpful with suggestions of activities for children in Kyoto. I had business to attend to while in Kyoto - the internet was easily accessed from our room, and the staff was very helpful with getting documents printed, and getting me where I needed to be for the conference. We will definitely stay at the Okura the next time we’re in Kyoto!

We Will Definitely Repeat the Next Time We’re in Kyoto

We liked everything about this hotel. Spacious room with a wonderful view and the great Japanese service with attention to detail. THe location was great: everything from several good restaurants around the corner to the east, and Teramachi St a block to the west (go north, not south under the arcade, for wonderful little shops of all kinds). Even the city bus route to Ryoan-ji and Kinkaku-ji goes by the hotel. We couldn’t have been more satisfied.

Traveler's tip on shopping

Teramachi Street (north as far as the Imperial Palace) is lined with shops at a range of price points featuring prints and paper goods, ceramics, metal work, as well as some interesting cafes--- just a wonderful place to browse for the perfect memento to bring back home.

Great location, great rooms, great people

The room was amazingly clean and spacious, even by western hotel standards. The employees of the hotel were also amazingly helpful. Perhaps one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in. Great location with hundreds of dining options near by, from 600 yen ramen to 9,000 yen kaiseki!!

Traveler's tip on recreational activities

If you speak a little Japanese, taking a paper making class at Raku-shi-kan near the Museum of Kyoto is alot of fun and worth the price (it’s 4,000 yen for a class of up to four people). The washi post cards you make are great to mail to your friends and family! Their phone number is 251-0078.

Good location and great servcie

My family of 4 stayed there for 3 nights and everyone loved the hotel. The rooms are spacious, very clean, comfortable and best of all the service. The concierge staff are knowledgeable, helpful and really cares whether their guest had a good time. If I ever return to Kyoto, I will definitely stay there again.

Traveler's tip on dining

We had not had a bad meal in Kyoto. The best is the restaurants inside the department stores. Among all, the restaurants in Hankyu are the best. The prices are reasonable and very close to the hotel. You should consider buying a all day bus pass for $5 US. It’s very convenient and easy.

conveniently located, good hotel

We stayed for a week at Hotel Okura (June 2009) and were pleasantly impressed. The hotel is centrally located, within walking distance of downtown Kyoto and the shopping avenues. Our (standard) room was quite spacious, v. clean and well appointed. The service was excellent. Overall a very good impression (a true 4 star hotel) and a definite recommendation. The only thing to be aware is that Okura is a western style hotel in a high-rise building. Thus, highly recommended for comfort and service, but less for local atmosphere.

Ideally located

The hotel is ideally located. I rented a bike throughout my visit and I saw everything I wanted to see. The staff were great! Their Concierge was awesome! She pointed me in the right direction and made sure that I did not missed out on anything in the very immediate area. Their staff from front to back were all outstanding.

Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay

If you are traveling to Kyoto on business but want to squeeze in a little bit of leisure and sightseeing - rent a bike! ride around Kyoto and visit all the Shrines, the old streets of the city, the gardens, the market and all the many restaurants - Kyoto is so accessible and so much fun even when you are there traveling on your own!

Great location, staff and rooms. Mountain side is best

Great upscale choice for Kyoto. The Okura is a grand, beautiful, large, immaculate hotel, with Expedia discount it was a bargain for the 5 nights we stayed. It’s north of crowded urban press of hotels clustering around the station. It’s above the subway, a three minute walk from a train line that takes you north and south along the eastern temple route. A 10 minute walk into Gion and a three minute walk from the big markets and the main restaurant row. Ask for the mountain view side. Staff was helpful and attentive. We have nothing but good things to say about it.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

The temples and gradens are stunning - but getting out first thing in the morning makes all the difference - avoiding the crowds. Nanzen-ji is a favorite - and the Gates are unforgettably beautiful.

Great hotel!

One of the best hotel I have ever stayed in and I have stayed in a lot of hotels! Staffs are very attentive, courteous, helpful and reliable. The services rendered were SO WONDERFUL! The concierge actually planned my trip in Kyoto, gave good suggestions to shows and dining which made my trip so memorable. They upgraded my room which are beautifully design, clean and comfortable and well equipped. Location is great and accessible by bus and subway within walking distance.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

Forget about Heian Shrine. Nothing much to see there.

Excellent room and a very convenient location!

This hotel was in walking distance to shopping, sites, subway, entertainment, and Gion area. I thought the location was outstanding. The room was larger than the average US hotel room and it also had large closet space. I was very surprised at the quality and service here. The staff was very helpful and friendly. It was a great price and an excellent value. I will cetainly be back to this hotel. I was super delighted!!
