1st time, I loved it!!!!

This was our first time in cancun. We did not know what to expect for chosing a hotel online. But once we arrived, we loved it. The view was beautiful, the hotel was so fancy and amazing. It was easy to get around to other places. The pool was so nice and big. We can not wait to go back. Perfect hotel for couples.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

We did not spend so much for our hotel. It was well worth it

Quaint little resort

My stay with my girlfriend and our 6 year old daughter was great! Immediately greeted w/smiles and the eagerness to take care of us. We arrived well before check-in (9 a.m) Lizet at the front desk hooked us up w/a room that was ready! It was nice to be able to unpack and get changed for the beach/pool. Everything w/neat and very clean, and the food was excellent and well priced. If you want to stay at a smaller resort w/all the bells and whistles of a mainstream one this is your place.

Very nice place

When I was reading the reviews of this hotel, I was definitely a bit nervous about what to expect...since so many people had complaints! I actully loved this place, the service was great, it was in a great location and was just a beautiful place. Definitely good value for the money. The only downside was the beach, but we just jumped the fence and swam down there anyways. I actully prefer smaller hotels, so this one was perfect for us. The beds are very firm, but are still comfortable. The shower takes a bit to warm up...so turn it on and leave it going for a couple of minutes.

Traveler's tip

Generally, if you tip you are probably going to get better service. And if you want your doors open to the balcony, switch off the airconditioner, as it will begin to drip if you dont.

This is actually my third time visiting this resort. Loved it every time!

I like the quaintness of a smaller resort. The food is pretty good (especially breakfast). Walking distance from the Flamingo Plaza and La Isla malls and a quick bus drive to the clubs!

Great Stay

Everyone was helpful. The hotel was comfortable. Awesome view of the ocean from the balcony, however there was no beach to walk to directly from the hotel. Oh well, taking the bus to the public beach was part of the experience.

Very relaxing!

While this hotel does not have the party atmosphere some are looking for, it does have a great location to go out if you want! We had kids with us and chose not to do the all-inclusive, but did upgrade our room to a studio. And took the bus to Walmart to do some grocery shopping. We love that the location was convenient for pharmacy/convience store and shopping! Pool was realxing and fun for the kids! Would definately recommend and go back! There are ALOT of stairs, so not for someone unable to handle that. We had 52 steps just to get to our room, but considered it good execise!

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

Upgrade the room and take the bus to the Walmart (about a 10-15 min. bus ride) to grocery shop. It’s safe and saves alot of money!

The service is good.

If you want to go to Avalon there may not be a beach in front of the hotel. I would not do the all inclusive since there are so many other places to eat and the drinks @ Avalon are not that good.

Traveler's tip on shopping

The shopping nearby is great.

Sticky situation

We had an average stay at the Avalon Grande in Cancun. The reason we wouldn’t go back or recommend this hotel is because it felt like a rain forest in our room. We knew the air conditioning was working because it was cool in our suite, but it was so wet that the floor was slippery. We complained about this and asked to be moved, but because we were in a two bedroom it couldn’t be accomodated. We weren’t the only ones with this problem as a man was at the counter complaining about the same thing when we were. Also as a side note, the curtains were quite dirty, but overall the facility is clean. They do a problem with an odor in the lobby and we saw them spraying air freshener to try to cover it up. We do have to give them props for being very honest. We left our safe key in the room and the housekeeping staff turned it into the front desk for safe keeping until we returned. Of that, we were very appreciative.

Traveler's tip on recreational activities

Playa Cabana behind The City. Just show room key to get in for free. Beautiful view of gulf and two gorgeous pools.

Good Hotel. No beach-access isn’t really possible.

Good hotel. Clean and central location in the hotel zone. Courteous and helpful bellman and housekeeping staff. We didn’t do the all-inclusive option so can’t speak to the foods or restaurants for breakfast or dinner. We did order food by the pool and that worked well for our family. There isn’t beach access unless you want to jump 4 ft to the beach. Not sure how you’ll get back up onto the concrete landing when you are done on the beach. Beach line is missing and that was disappointing for our girls. The kids club was never opened while we were visiting - we tried every day. That was bit frustrating and I had read that before in other reviews for the Avalon so I wasn’t surprised. The main pool was beautiful and offered plenty of lounges for sunbathing. The staff did a nice job of trying to keep activities going around the pool. The rap music complete w/f-bombs was a bit annoying given there were children at the pool, thankfully that only happened a couple of times during our visit. All in all a good experience and pleasant staff. If you are looking for beach access you will need to go farther south in the hotel zone.

Traveler's tip

We were able to access the beach by taking the bus to the Kukulcan plaza and walking out behind the mall by the Santander bank. There is a sand driveway that you walk along and can enter the beach there. We were able to walk north from there and once the beach line ran out, get back to the street by walking up through another hotel. Our girls loved that and collected quite a few shells.

Good value in early March, 2009

Attractive Moorish architecture, convenient location 5-10 minutes via local bus to the entertainment district, beautiful lobby and buffet breakfast/brunch, very nice pools, 50 steps from the beautiful ocean waves (though the beach front is narrow).

Traveler's tip on dining

Dinner at Hacienda El Mortero in the entertainment district is fun. The menu is varied with an emphasis on Mexican specials; the interior design is appealing, and the mariachi band is great fun. They’ll come to your table and play your request.

View is important

We purchased 4 rooms at this hotel for 2 nights. We have stayed in Cancun over 200 times so we know what to expect. This was the first time I have felt like I wanted to change hotels. Our room was small and dismal and overlooked a staircase. When I asked to be moved they told me to wait until tomorrow. The next day they moved us into a great room with a wonderful view for the same price, but the original impression was really awful. I would never return. We travel every week so most hotels don’t faze me. But our first room made me feel like I was really in a developing country on a "mission trip".

Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay

Insist on the best room they have for the price with a view.

Great service, friendly people

The beaches for all the hotels I saw in Cancun, lost about 4 or 5 feet of sand in the hurricane. So the beaches are not very wide and are hard to access because the hotel eccess is a drop of 4 or 5 feet. But the beaches can be accessed, the service was great, the food was very good, and it is still Cancun.

There is NO beach!!

When you travel to Cancun, what you want is a piece of nice beach. When we arrived to this hotel, we discovered THERE IS NO BEACH. Since one year ago, when one hurricane hit the area, Avalon Grand lost its beach!! So you have to walk to another Avalon hotel (like 500 mts) to bathe in a beach that is no nice at all! If you want to enjoy the beach, avoid this hotel until they fix this situation. Be aware of another thing: they want to charge you for almost everything, even a toll free call! Staff was really nice and helpful, and even hotel facilities are very nice, but the issue with the beach was really troubling!

Great Visit

Stayed in the two bedroom suite with the ocean room for 5 days. Arrived to Cancun earlier than posted check-in time and was promptly escorted to my room. Hotel was great. Great views, Great staff(Bellhops and Alex the entertainment coordinator, Great omletes when coming in at 8 in the morning. My only compliant was the wrist-band which you were required to wear 24/7.

Traveler's tip on nightlife

Hotel is about a 20 minute walk to the clubs but directly across the street from restaurants and shopping. Taxis are readily available outside and as with everything, rates are negoitable.

Solid 3 star hotel

We did an all-inclusive package with this hotel. It had one restaurant, 1 bar, 1 buffet and a sister hotel 2 doors down with the same. The food was fine. The room was clean with good air conditioning. The bed was a little on the hard side. The pool was nice and had a bar on deck, but it was hard to tell how to order snacks from the bar. Easy access to the beach.

Upon my return to Cancun, Avalon will be my place.

First time in Cancun...loved my hotel. I will definetely stay there again, I will also tell my friends and family.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

Upon arriving at airport head out straight to the "colectivos" avoid the tourist information booths, they only want to sell resort/time share. Also, change money to te natinal currency. Sunblock..enjoy....

Nice hotel, no beach access

The hotel was very nice, and the staff was friendly. Unfortunately, the beach access was destroyed by hurricane Wilma. You are able to walk down the street to their other hotel and access the beach, but it gets to be a bit cumbersome. Also, with no elevator, going up and down the stairs gets tiresome. We are young with no kids, and we were quite tired of the stairs and the walk to the beach after a few days. If you want to stay by the pool all day, it’s a great place. If you have kids or want to stay on the beach all day, I would recommend another hotel.

Traveler's tip on dining

Go to Checandole (authentic Mexican food) - across the road from the RUI. Best food we ate in the hotel zone, and the prices were much cheaper than typical hotel zone dining. The owner also speaks English well if you need it.

OK Hotel

Rooms were clean and good size. Beds were hard but reasonably comfortable. Food was OK but not great. Waitstaff were not that friendly even when we left tips. (tips are included). After being there a week we were still treated like we were strangers. No beach but we knew that before we went. All in all, I would not stay there again.

Excellent vacation!

My son and I stayed at the Avalon Grand during the month of June, 2008. This was my second trip to Cancun and we were very impressed with both the hotel and the service at Avalon Grand. The food was excellent, the room was comfortable with a spectacular view, we have nothing but great things to say about this hotel. DEFINITELY recommend this resort to travelers!
