great room and packaged breakfast

Overpriced ... did not like the choices in continental breakfast basket or having to use the coffee packet in room and make own coffee, which was not good ... would have preferred breakfast in the restaurant (which was not open except for lunch and dinner) ... other than the price and the packaged breakfast, everything else was top class.

Very impressed

We thoroughly enjoyed our three-night stay at this hotel! The location was perfect, right in the heart of the old city, and convenient to everything we wanted to see and do. The staff were pleasant and accomodating, and our room, although small, was very comfortable. We can’t wait to go back and have already referred this hotel to a few friends!

Very warm atmosphere and a great continental breakfast each morning.

GREAT HOTEL and STAFF. The ONLY downside, for those with vehicles they plan on using, is your vehicle will be located a couple of blocks away.

Traveler's tip on shopping

GREAT location for those who want to shop and be in the middle of the old town atmosphere for dining and soaking it all in.

Terrific hotel

The Hotel Du Vieux is right in the middle of the older part of Quebec and conveniently located for walks to the major sites. The hotel room was cozy and nicely furnished. Each morning a picnic basket with pastries from a great bakery down the street appeared on a hook on the door of our room. There is a room downstairs with couches and computers. Hotel staff were cheerful and helpful about giving tips and making reservations. My 14-year-old son and I had a wonderful time here.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

Right down the street from the hotel is a funky little cafe called Le Temporel, which was a high point. We enjoyed our visit to the Musee National des Beaux-Arts du Quebec and the walk across the Plains of Abraham to get there. We took the Ghost Tour one evening - spooky, and lots of interesting information.

Quebec Getaway

From check-in to check out we received cheerful and courteous service. The large lounge was well stocked with books, games, and DVDs and there were two PCs with free high-speed internet service. The picnic baskets hung on your door each morning with a continental breakfast were a nice touch as well. Perfect location in the middle of everything in the heart of the walled city. I would definitly return.

Traveler's tip on dining

This is a touristy area so there are often lines at the restaurants. The food is not-inexpensive, and I am used to New York prices. The quality is generally very good, however. Try buying wine, cheese, sausages, bread, and supplies at the numerous little stores or the large market by the river and make your own sandwiches. Take advantage of the free Ecolobus, a great way to get around.

Pick This Hotel!

We were very pleased with this hotel, and found the location perfect for exploring "Old town." It’s right in the center of one of the main streets, St Jean. The rooms were clean, and include a fridge & stove if you don’t want to eat out every meal. Our room looked over St Jean, but it was super quiet (although the streets were packed) The bed was also great-firm. The front desk staff is fabulous-they set up excursions for us, one of which was a walking tour of the old city (FREE if you stay at the hotel). They also remembered our preference for speaking French, and would switch between French and English according to each client’s language preference. We also really like the restaurant connected to the hotel. We would definitely stay here again.

Traveler's tip on recreational activities

Do the walking tour-our guide tailored the tour according to our interests. It helps you get oriented and lets you figure out what you really want to spend your time doing. There’s a lot of touristy stuff (although strangely tastefully touristy). We’re not group tour people, but this was definitely worth the time. If you do whale watching, do the ZODIAC and not the boat tour (you may need to call the company directly or have your hotel set that up)

Wow! This is great, home away from home.

From the moment we arrived on August 13th until we departed on August 18th, we were home with family. This was one of the best maintained hotels that we have ever seen. We were in room 401, didn’t have much of a view but it was extremely quiet and the beds were soft, down pillows (4), toss pillows, a down comforter layered between double sheets, and a cozy knit quilt lay a the foot of the bed. The staff made the stay so rewarding as they were knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. On the first floor there is a big and comfy gathering room with games and books galore, in addition to two computers, a hot/cold water dispenser, an ice cube machine and several vending machines. The lower level had a small workout room, but who needed that with all the walking up and down the streets! The breakfast basket was a great start for the day and was nicely placed on a hook outside your door. The maid staff made sure that your supply of coffee, sugar, and cups for your in room machine was always complete and replenished. The location was so close to everything in the Old City and Port and it isn’t far to walk outside the gates to the more modern parts either. If you go before September, it is a must to go see the Moulin (along the Old Port) and the Cirque de Soleil(under the expressway - yes under the expressway) both free events held Wednesday through Sunday nights. A fantastic hotel for a fantastic time in a beautiful city.

Traveler's tip

No need for a car if you stay here. Cabs are very reasonable. There is a great deal of walking up and down steep vertical streets within the Old City and Old Port, have extremely good walking shoes. Food prices seem to be high, try walking out beyond the gates and go to more local restaurants or go buy bread, cheese, fruit, and wine at the market and have a picnic in one of the many parks.

In the middle of the action

We had the best time visiting Quebec City and staying at Hotel Du Vieux helped make it that way. The service was over the top. The location just right and the breakfast basket on the door hook an added delight. Would return for a stay in a minute.

Great staff, great location, great hotel!

My family (2 adults, 3 kids age 14 and under) stayed here 3 nights, and found nothing but great service from the entire staff. Friendly, helpful, always available. We had a couple of quirky needs (extra person in the room, storage for a couple bicycles), and they were willingly positive about how to help. Room itselff was spacious (a Superior King, modern, well maintained. The location is terrific for exploring all of the old Quebec city. We thought it good value, without any real compromises.

Charming hotel with terrific location

All the previous reviews about location are right on - it doesn’t get any more central than this. However, there’s much more to like. Rooms are small but modern and clean, with very comfortable beds and flat screen TV. Nice common areas like the reading room with two computers and a meeting room. Discounted parking is available 2 blocks away - inquire with the front desk. If this is your first trip to QC, be sure to print good directions in advance or take GPS; it can be quite confusing.

Traveler's tip on dining

You can’t go wrong - every meal was very good. However, there are hardly any cheap eats in the old city. If you need to feed young kids on the cheap, you’ll need to head toward Ste. Foy/Sillery

Great place to stay!

We traveled as a family of four and rented a room with two queen beds. The room was spacious, with comfy chairs, a couch, and a fridge. The location was perfect for walking throughout the old city. We were able to go to a number of restaurants, lots of shops, and numerous historical sites - all without ever moving our car. We highly recommend this hotel, great hospitality - the staff was bi-lingual and very helpful.

Central location for Old City site seeing - all within walking distance.

Very satisfied

This hotel is small and therefore the rooms are not large, but they are pleasant and clean and the hotel staff were wonderful. The location is great - you can walk anywhere in the Old City in a short time. Parking is available in an underground lot one block from the hotel and is for a daily fee. There is virtually no dependable parking on the street, and what there is is metered and very much enforced. Food for every meal is available everywhere around you, from small bakeries to expensive restaurants and everything in between. Really enjoyed our three day stay.

There are plenty of sights to see in the Old City, but for many of the recreational things for kids/teenagers, you are going to need a car. Keep in mind that all road signs are in French, but after a day or so you get to know the words you really need. Remember that east-oest, west-quest, north-nord and south-sud are in French and those words are really important on the highways around Quebec.

Great Location to enjoy Old Quebec

We drove here from Smuggler’s Notch Vermont, lovely drive. Be ready to drop your luggage at Hotel then drive diagonally across street to city parking. Leave your car, pay the $16/day parking and walk. Best to arrive before 5 pm they close the street just up from the hotel to pedestrians only. Hotel, service, reception, cleanliness and room great. We wanted a pet free room (wife allergic to fleas) which is an upgrade from Expedia standard and got it. Being in Quebec has the old charm of Europe without a long flight. Like Europe you do a lot of enjoyable walking.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

We went to the Chateau Frontenac bar just before sunset for a drink and view. Well worth the splurge, great service, view of seaway and city. Next day walked down to harbor area, enjoyed the shops and cafes. Took the seaway cruise. Up from Hotel du Vieux are lots of shops, cafes and restaurants, as mentioned street closed to traffic and pedestrian’s only. Bistro attached to the Hotel had all you can eat Mussels for 19 Canadian, fresh and great.

Excellent location, easy access to the whole city Fun street. Knowledgeable staff. convenient parking. Small but efficient room .Private picnic basket breakfast was lovely. Old hotel, not much ambiance but we didn’t spend much time at the hotel. Lovely library with WFI and TV and comfy chairs. We would go back in a heartbeat.

Quebec City flavor and flair at its best

Fine hotel, rating should be a 5 star. Immaculate. The basket on the door was refreshing and different. Pictures do not do it justice. In the middle of Old Quebec City. The staff is so friendly and helpful with our tours and information. The restaurant next door has some of the finest cuisine. The duck or "canard" was exquisite. If you love clams, this is the place to go. A must see is the Basilica of Notre Dame’. Even if not Catholic, you can appreciate the splendor of the gold and intricate designs.

Treated Like Family

My wife and I had a wonderful stay at the Hotel Du Vieux Quebec. From the first moment we entered the front lobby until the time we checked out, we were treated like family. The room was very comfortable. For breakfast each morning, one of the staff would put a picnic basket on the hook on our door. It was like having an indoor picnic everyday. The hotel staff was exceptional. The hotel is located in the heart of Old Quebec which made it easy for us to walk to different restaurants and to Chateau Frontenac. We would definitely stay there again if we decide to revisit Quebec.

Traveler's tip on dining

If you want to get a taste of traditional Canadian French Pea soup, go to the Cafe Buade near Chateau Frontenac. The food there was excellent and less expensive. If you want to go for some French pastry, you need to go to Paillards on Rue St. Jean.

For us, this was an ideal small hotel close to everything we wanted.

This hotel was idealy situated for exploring the old town. The staff we met were extremely helpful and fun. The room was very nicely appointed and beautifully clean. The maid even took note of the fact we had requested de-caff coffee on the first night and ensured we were provided with some for the next night. The breakfast basket was very cute, but we did not particularly like the cartons of fruit provided in it,apple sauce and mixed fruit, but it’s a question of personal taste I suppose. Our room was on the first floor at the back, which meant it did not have a view but was quiet,an important factor for us. The area is full of shops, restraunts and local sights. Parking in the local underground car park is 2 minutes away, again a bonus. The only downside is that the restraunt attached to the hotel was busy and the service was indiferent to say the least.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

There are all the main attractions of the old city within a 10 minute walk of the hotel. Tourist information is also within a 10 minute walk and they are incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. All seem to speak excellent english if this is a problem.

Good location

The front desk service is extremely slow. The best feature is that each morning a picnic basket is left on a hook on your door filled with breakfast goodies and that you are centrally located. This is a good hotel for travelers with young children and the twenty-something crowd.

Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay

You can easily walk to the train station from this hotel. If you have more than four days in Quebec City you may want to consider taking the train to Montreal for the day and the dinner train back. Well worth the money and it gives you and excellent opportunity to relax and view the countryside. Not recommended for families but great for the independent traveler or couple.

Great location, fun b’kfast, quiet comfortable room

The location is excellent for seeing old Québec; you’re in it! We really enjoyed the picnic basket on the door hook for breakfast. There’s a game room/library downstairs for those who miss the serendipity of meeting other guests. Well situated for many nice restaurants, too, for the rest of your meals, including one next door (without going out to the street). Hotel staff was friendly and helpful. The straightening of our room was not great at first, but improved as soon as we mentioned it downstairs. Rooms in the back are quieter, we were told; ours was.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

There are 2 Bretagne creperies up the rue Saint Jean; the nearer one, without the exotic costumes, had great crepes for far less.

super friendly and centerally located

This was a quick three day visit for us and it was wonderful. The people at the front desk were so helpful in their recommendations, always smiling and very knowledgeable. The room was recently redone and comfortable. The location was probably the best thing about this hotel, you could walk everywhere. We put the car in the parking garage a stone’s throw away and walked throughout the city. I suggest the restaurant attached to the hotel as well. We had a delicious, affordable lunch there. Enjoy!
