Wonderful service!!!

This was our first trip to Costa Rica and we wanted an adventure. El Tucano is off the beaten path, but the staff is very accomdating and friendly. There were not any amenities in the room, not even a clock. But the room was very comfortable. The grounds were well kept and absolutely gorgeous. The balcony to eat on that overlooked the stream was relaxing and romantic. Frank the tour guide is a great asset to the hotel and befriends you immediately. One thing to note, in this area of Costa Rica, there are not many english speaking people, so bring the translation dictionary! The town next door has a market where we picked up snacks and beverages to save some $$$.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

Make sure you take advantage of the tours: Volcano, cano negro, canopy and walking tours! You will be amazed at the lush rain forest, beautiful active volcano and wild animals (monkey’s, caymen’s and iguana’s). We never even saw a snake!!!!!

Good place to stay

We loved it at the hotel, the breakfast in the morning alongside the small stream is the best way to start your day. Although, it can be a little difficult to find, it was well worth it! When we return later this year, we will stay at the same place.

Traveler's tip on dining

Go into Quesada and walk around ..it was fun

Relaxing and pretty.

Past the guardpost, El Tucano’s wide, palm lined entrance road opens up to a generous parking lot flanked by pastel buildings. Think 50’s bungalows, less the pink flamingos. The desk help was pleasant, but did not offer to take our luggage, a distinct snub considering the price of the room. Buffet breakfast is included, and sumptuous: meats, eggs (scrambled or fried), pancakes, muffins, french toast, cereal, milk, two juices, a mountain of fresh fruit. Daylight pours into the cavernous dining room, and french doors lead out to a tropical forested cliff, and a rushing brook below. Blue and yellow butterflies flit past. Tablecloths and nice settings complete the dream. Our room was large with two king size beds, a desk and wardrobe with safe, and a jumbo shower with lots of fluffy white towels. The pool is one of the best in CR, practically olympic sized, cool and refreshing. The Spa is separated by sex where clothing is optional, and treatments are private. Unfortunately, the massage therapist I was traveling with was dissapointed with the massage he received.

Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay

You could easily drive past The Occidental El Tucano and Spa if you blink, the entrance sign is an advertisement that serves more to confuse than mark the spot. We drove past it twice. Moderately priced spa treatments are the reason to stay here, take advantage of them. If you came to see the volcano, this resort is too far away from the action.
