Guidebook gave me different expectations
I chose this hotel based on the 2009 Frommers guide which described this hotel as the nicest resort in the area and it had recently undergone extensive remodeling. The price in the guidebook was much higher than I paid through Expedia, so perhaps my rate got me the un-remodeled part of the hotel. Lets just say it would have been luxurious when I was a kid, many years ago. However, I would stay there again. The rate was good and I was only in the room to sleep--too many other things to do in the tropical-paradise area. I did not eat at the hotel at all--the prices seemed high. The guidebook was right about its recommended restaurants in Port Douglas.
Traveler's tip on dining
Salsa was a recommended restaurant and very worth it. Was probably the best meal I enjoyed on my trip. But you must make a reservation. I could not get in there the first day I tried. Also, the Port O Call bar/restaurant in the hostel-like community of the same name was recommended as good food/good value, and I would agree.
