A Russian Vacation
The Four Seasons in Cyprus is full of wealthy Russians, and perhaps less wealthy English people. No Americans. Many were there with their families for R and R and there is a plethora of activities for people who enjoy the beach, water sports, etc. Wi Fi is expensive in the rooms, but they have a free area in the lobby. Food is generally good if you dont order a Caesar salad, because they make it with iceburg lettuce. The hotel was quite wonderful even for those of us not interested in water sports. Staff extremely helpful. Everyone speaks English. But the neighborhood in Lammasol is shoddy beach bum area with tourist places galore. But finding a real experience in Cyprus is difficult. I suspect one has to stay on the Turkish side. Even Nicosia is shoddy. The hotel has a fabulous buffet breakfast that is included. Over a weekend, even at the end of October, quite crowded, plus it is the place where the locals go for high end events, weddings, etc. This is not part of the Four Seasons chain, but with a beach, five restaurants, a spa, and other amenities, it is equal to them.
Though we had a good time, I dont recommend Cyprus as a destination. Cheap flights from London, and evidently from Russia, have turned it into a rather shoddy looking tourist hangout with subpar restaurants and everything geared toward tourism. Driving is English style. That being said, I think if wed had a week there and could have spent some time on the Turkish side we might have had a different experience. We wanted to go to Santorini or Crete, but after tourist season it is hard with transportation to those places on a tight schedule. I can imagine driving in Cyprus could be a nightmare in the summer when the place is inundated with tourists from everywhere.
