Not so grand!

The Grand was not so grand. This hotel needs renovation! The bed looked wavy and sleep that way, the drain in the bathroom was very slow. The view out our window was of a wall. I would not recommend this hotel but there is not a lot to choose from in the area. I would recommend trying to stay at one of the hotels in the park.

Grand Hotel is aptly named!

We had a grand experience all the way around. A grand dinner & breakfast buffet. A grand room with a very comfortable room. And the hotel was convenient to the Grand Canyon park entrance. We recommend it highly!

Catch the breakfast buffet. It was really good. Dinner was great as well.

Great location

The hotel is OK overall. Overall facilities in decent shape. Rooms and bathrooms are pretty basic. Good restaurant for dinner, with live music. Main attraction of the hotel is the location. Within 5 minutes or so of the main South Rim park entrance. Also, several restaurants, food stores, gas stations etc. in the immediate vicinity which made it convenient. I would rate the hotel as good, and the location as excellent.

Very convenient location. 5 minute drive from main entrance to the South Rim. We only had about 24 hours to visit the South Rim....this hotel was the perfect location.

Great weekend in the Grand Canyon

Nice Hotel, beautiful lobby. Concierge was extremely helpful with tours and information. Room was fine, beds not that comfortable, but other than that a good place to stay. The food in the restaurant was very good, but service was slow.

Make sure you fully research if you want to go to the Skywalk, it is much farther away than anticipated, 20 mile drive on a dirt road, and they nickel and dime you for entrance fee, parking, besides fee to go on walk. No cameras allowed either. We canceled, and they were nice about that at least.

grand hotel

Hotel is very dated and worn but clean. Toilet didn’t flush well. Exercise bikes did not work in exercise room.

Traveler's tip on recreational activities

We took Papillion helicopter tour of the grand canyon and it was incredible. Just breath taking. You go to areas in the canyon only accessible by helicopter. The tour was almost an hour long and well worth it. Dinner at the El Tovar lodge was great- 5 stars but be sure to get reservations.

The Grand Canyon was magnificient. The hotel was terrible. I don’t think that the owners have re-invested in captial maintenance for 30 yrs.

Very nice hotel

The hotel is really characteristic, the rooms are clean and comfortable, the service professional. Its position is very convenient, very close to the entrance of the Grand Canyon, on the main road leading to the Park. You cannot miss it!

Big Time Rip Off

While the lobby and restaurant were nice, the price of the room was totally outrageous, considering the room itself. No glasses, only cheap styrofoam cups. The Shower had no water pressure. The ice machine barely worked. The room was way over what it should have been priced. I felt totally ripped off and unhappy. Never again.

Don’t stay here. It wasn’t worth it.

Nice Hotel and convenient to Grand Canyon

Hotel was very nice and recommend staying there if you need to get to the South Rim attractions quickly. We needed to be at the back country post before 5AM to catch bus, and it was a short drive. Rooms were spacious and beds comfortable. Bathroom had odd door that opened outward instead of in. Large lobby and dining on premises was a plus.

Traveler's tip on dining

DO NOT EVEN EAT at the "Italian" restaurant located about 3/10th’s of a mile from The Grand Hotel. Horrible is not a vile enough word to describe the experience, let alone the food. Really poorly mannered hostess, mediocre wait service, and believe it or not, we were seated amongst the gift shop wares... crazy! Especially when there was plenty of available seating in main dining room. I was shocked that menu stated that 18% tip would be added to bill. Luckily it wasn’t or I would have blown!

Great people, okay hotel

The Grand Hotel has a great location if you can’t get into a hotel in the Park. The hotel is pretty old, and the rooms need a facelift. The staff are wonderful, and made us feel very welcome on arrival and at the restaurant. The restaurant had good food at reasonable prices. The live entertainment was quite good too, and unexpected. If the rooms were updated (better TVs, toilets that don’t wobble, better water pressure), it would a great place to stay.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

We took a Jeep tour. It just happened to leave from the Tusayan McDonalds, which is right next door to the Grand Hotel. Very convenient. The day we were there, there was a Native American swap meet in the field between the McDonalds and the hotel. It was very nice.

A clean, convenient option to Rim Lodges

I stayed with my family of 4 in early August ’09 for 3 nights at The Grand Hotel just outside the Grand Canyon Park. It was a nice find, and we’d stay there again if we go back. The free shuttle bus into the park stops nearby all day/nite long and is a great option to driving into the park which gets congested in summer months. The hotel was safe, clean, comfortable, clean, AC rms, close to family restaurants and the IMAX theater, too. The hotel restaurant food and buffet was ’good’ and they even had a country singer perform at dinnertime. We would highly recommend this hotel as an adequate option to crowded, expensive Xanterra-run rim lodges during the summer months.

parking around back of hotel was more convenient for unloading/loading luggage.

Ok if you’re not hungry or thirsty

The hotel looked to be fairly new. Room was nice, but pillows/bedding not very good quality. The concierge was very helpful. Restaurant was advertised as open for bkfst, lunch and dinner, but was only open for dinner at 5:00pm and stopped serving at 8:00pm for a live entertainment event on a Friday night!. Also, advertised that the bar opened at 2:00 and had happy hour until 5:00. Never even opened until 5:00! We had to leave the hotel to eat and drink and weren’t very happy about that.

Traveler's tip on dining

The hotel El Tovar is awesome for a drink outside to watch the sunset. Their restaurant had fantastic food and provided excellent service. One of the best steaks I’ve had in a long time.

Rustic

As my wife says it was old dated and Brown, but it is located at the entrance to the Grand Canyon and bus service was across the street to the Park. The service was polite and efficent. I would look else where for lodging next time.

Traveler's tip on recreational activities

hike the whole southern rim of the canyon, the views from the overlooks are unbelieveable but the views from some place just off the trail are even better

Very comfortable

What a surprise among typical franchise motels along the only stretch of road to find this gem. Friendly staff and comfortable surroundings make this the place to come after a day on the river!

Where are my postcards

I gave the hotel desk 2 sets of postcards to send. I’ve been back for a 2 weeks and still no postcards. The hotel was ok. The pictures on the internet were not quite a true picture.
