great for a single, would definitely go back

my single room was small, but lovely. the hotel was close to my daughter’s apartment and convenient to most destinations. i was able to get around nicely by myself when she was in class. the staff was very helpful and friendly. when i extended my stay for a night, i didn’t get the same wonderful rate i found online, but they did discount their standard rate a few euros. lovely old hotel w/nice lobby, elevator (lift!), modern bathrooms, beautiful breakfast room, and very comfy beds. i have already recommended the hotel to other visiting parents in my daughter’s program.

don’t bother to bring a flat iron. even with a good converter, you’ll blow the fuse.

Excellent hotel

Great location, decor and service. The dining room where breakfast is served is charming and includes an adjoining terrace. Would definitely chose this hotel for my next visit to Florence.

Rooms aren’t finished being built!

The Orto De Medici Hotel is split into two portions. The older portion is a 4-5 story structure located above the lobby. The rooms are a little small and a little older. We booked a "premium" room, which turned out to be a completely renovated wing around the garden (if you could call it that) in the back of the building. The first room they showed us was clearly not finished. There were no light fixtures in the main room, no pictures on the walls, and the strong odor of drywall and glue. It had all the charm of a cheap condo in Florida. Clearly, they just wanted to start making money back on the construction costs as soon as possible, and were finishing the room between bookings. We asked for another room, and were shown a slightly more finished version of the same decor. It’s ultra, ultra modern - completely black & white, cold (in every sense), and echoey. Every night we felt sick after an hour in the room, which we attributed to the strong construction odors. It took hours the next day to shake off the nausea. Now, the room may not have been the direct cause of the sickness, but we felt fine before we arrived in Florence, and we felt great as soon as we left. And there’s no denying that the cold, monochromatic feel of the room offered little comfort. Because we paid ahead of time, we could not justify changing hotels altogether. Really great & friendly staff that tried to accommodate us, but I would never stay here again.
