BOHEMIAN CHIC!

Villa Schwaiger is a very quaint, cozy hotel in the embassy district of Prague. It is a 10-minute walk from the subway and a 2-minute walk from the bus stop. Our room was quiet, comfortable, and updated: bathroom was beautiful; central AC worked well from in-room thermostat; also small fridge with mini-bar. Television had five cable channels -- including CNN London, MTV Germany, and ESPN Europe. The included breakfast was good -- scrambled eggs, hard-boiled eggs, sausages, fresh peppers, olives, local breads, a variety of juices & milk -- but it was the same every morning. We never ate lunch or dinner in the hotel so I cannot comment on the cash menus. The employees spoke very good English and were very helpful. There was no clock in the room, but staff was happy to make wake-up calls; also happy to call a taxi. If the cash was available, they were happy to exchange US dollars for Czech crowns at daily market rate. They even kept some emergency medical supplies on hand. Their main objective was to leave their guests alone unless the guests wanted something -- which is good!! Internet was available in hotel lobby. The housekeeping service was excellent -- we never saw the housekeeper, but our room was always perfect!

Traveler's tip for business travelers

Czech Republic operates on 110 volts. An adapter for our laptop was available at a local electronics store for about $8 US. The hotel staff was able to direct us to the right store.

An ejoyable stay

This hotel provides a good balance of service and value. The staff were helpful when we needed assistance. The room was cleaned each day, but did show the wear and tear mentioned in other reviews. However, what matters to us is cleanliness and comfort, and Villa Schwaiger provided this. The breakfast was the standard fare that we have seen throughout Europe. It was good, and had a fine selection of meats, cheeses, breads, cereals, and a nice fruit salad among other things. The lobby also has a computer with internet access, so we were able to plan train and bus trips to other towns around Prague with little effort.

Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay

Airport to Villa for 26 Kc in 30 minutes via bus 119, Metro A, bus 131. The metro is an 8 block walk from Villa or take bus 131 (every 6-15 minutes). Buy spare 26 Kc tickets at the station for future multiple transfer trips for 75 min after validation. A little convenience store is right across from the Villa. The pub across from the Villa is fantastic for food and drink. There is a produce market near the metro, and a grocery store across the street from it. Butchers and bakeries W of Villa.

Nice hotel, nice area

My wife and I enjoyed to stay at Villa Schwaiger. Clean room, friendly staff. Good breakfast. It’s a little bit far from center. You have to walk about 10 minutes from metro and about 5 minutes from bus station. Hotel is not luxurious but nice. Frankly I don’t think they deserve 4 star rate but however it can be considered as nice boutique hotel. Quiet neighborhood. Across the street there is a real Czech pub with friendly staff don’t hesitate to go there.

4 stars minus 2

The area in which the hotel is located is very pretty, but the hotel itself is not well kept up. It needs a good coat of paint all over (walls are dirty), changing of the stained carpet in the rooms, fixing of the cracks in the walls and the bathroom tiles that pop out in many places. Room 104, one of the rooms we were given initialy, sits on top of the hotel’s restaurant and smells like fried oil. We requested and were given new rooms. The hotel has no elevator, as Prague "is not for the invalids and the elderly" as the female receptionist duly informed us upon arrival. Our elderly family member was placed in a room on the 1st floor, but that means two substantial flights of steps up. Expedia/the hotel does not mention this. The 2 male receptionists were nice. Cleaning service is OK, one gets clean towels daily, but sheets are changed whenever. The room has no basic accessories (i.e., note pad and pen, feedback survey sheet).Soap is given out stingily, and is of poor quality. El Gaucho, the hotel’s restaurant has good ambience and serves good steaks, but this is all that is worth eating there. It is expensive. Its garden is very nice.Breakfast at the hotel is meager with no fresh fruit and limited yoghurt--and even this not on a daily basis.Coffee was atrocious. The hotel is connected to the downtown via bus # 131 (5 mins walk up the street from the hotel).Prague may be a member of the EU capitals, but is far away from the European standards of hospitality.

Traveler's tip

Eat at the restaurant across the street from VS. Get water from the mini market also across the street.Always bargain for cab fares in advance. Book your own boat ride on the Vltava. Fresh fruit at the end of the #131 bus line. Do visit Terezienstadt and Josefov and be aware of the cruelty that gave birth to today’s historical sites. It is puzzling but interpretive.

Villa Schwaiger in Prague

10-15 minutes away from the Metro station. Very good breakfast. The staff all spoke English and were very helpful. Free WiFi. Only one complaint is the sheer noise - rooms facing the main road.

Quiet refuge

Villa Schweiger is a lovely, but not luxurious small hotel in a quiet neighborhood of embassies, close to two large parks. Prague center and the castle are pleasant walks or two tram or Metro stops away. No passenger elevator in the hotel - just a lift for your bags. It was nice to get away from the crowds after a day of sightseeing, and there are very nice restaurants in the area that are much cheaper than downtown. Service was unobtrusive, but helpful; very good complimentary breakfast. It is a 6 or 7 minute easy walk to public transportation. Didn’t try the hotel restaurant, but if you like Czech pub fare and inexpensive beer, go right across the street. We would definitely return.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

When you need a break in Central Prague take the time to find an out-of-the-way spot. Tea, coffee or beer can be triple the price at a place right on a popular street. If you’re through for the day try dining outside of Old or New Towns or Mala Strana. You can save a lot of money and still eat quite well.

It was a very nice and plesant visit to Prague that we will never forget.

Villa Schwaiger was a very pleasant experience. The hotel is not only clean, spacious and comfortable but the employees were very polite and helpful. They provided us with tourist information, transportation and directions to all the attractions and places we decided to go. They were very honest and never pushed us to do something we did not ask for. It really impressed me when I asked them where we could find the church of Baby Jesus of Prague. Since this is not a mayor tourist attraction they simply were glad to find out for us. When they found it, they also advised us on how to get there. They were wonderful! Food in their "Gaucho Restaurant" was excellent, delicious and at reasonable price. The location is good. It is a very nice neighborhood where there are several Embassies so walking towards the Metro/Tram Station (both services are only two or three stations from historical downtown) is very safe. I will recommend you take the tram so you could admire the beautiful view of Prague City. We definitely go back there.

Outstanding comfort and value

We stayed at Villa Schwaiger for 3 days in August and would return enthusiastically. The neighborhood is quiet, with embassies all around. We felt very safe walking in the area both day and night. The hotel is a short walk (5 - 10 minutes at most) from a subway station on a very clean, modern subway system. The train will take you to the old city in a matter of minutes. You can also walk easily to the Prague Castle. Our room was huge and very clean, and everything was in good working condition. The furniture was attractive; the beds were very comfortable; there was a table with chairs as well as a desk, an armoire, and a large platform for suitcases. The buffet breakfast was excellent, with good food and good service in a pleasant room. The staff members we encountered were fluent in English.
