Gran Bahia Principe Tulum
Tulum is one of 3 resorts on the massive Gran Bahia Principe complex- its impossible to see everything thats there- the beaches were nice and not too crowded- the location of the hotel was good for making full or half day trips to the ruins of Tulum, Muyil, Xel-Ha, Chichen Itza, Coba and others as well as Playa Del Carmen / Cozumel and Aktun Chen cave. The rooms were rather small, but you couldnt beat the price- its also a pretty good place to bring kids- the food was excellent each time we ate there at the hotel. Bring lots of sunscreen and bugspray and calamine lotion, especially if youre visiting any of the ruin sites in the vacinity.
We went with Hertz rental car service- when we got to their depot near the Cancun airport, they wanted a deposit of $3000 for the car "in case anything happens." You have to pay it, or youre stranded. Beware of this!!! It helps, if you dont feel like going to any crowded and touristy places, to avoid Playa Del Carmen and Cozumel altogether- theyre both crowded by throngs of people and annoying shopkeepers that dont let you alone- Playa Del Carmen has grown incredibly in the last decade- it can be increasingly frustrating if you have to drive through its streets, find parking, etc.. Taking the ferry over to Cozumel is much more expensive now ($20 bucks+ per person each way) and the island is even more expensive.

The Gran Bahia Principe Tulum is paradise!
My wife and I stayed at the Gran Bahia Principe Tulum from Oct 10-17. It was our third time in Mexico. We had stayed at the Riu Caribe in Cancun previosly and wanted to try something different. The ride from the airport to the resort does take around 90 minutes, but we enjoyed looking at the countryside (the expedia transfer with Best Day was great). The hotel is immaculate. We tried 3 of the sit down dinners (the gourmet, the brazilian steakhouse and the japanese). They were all fantastic but the Japanese was the best. The beach is wonderful. The water is perfectly clear and warm. There are lots of fish and coral to see. My wife doesnt snorkel but she was able to enjoy the fish at the Akumal end of the beach where the water is quite calm and protected by a reef. We highly recommend the hotel.

Loved it and cant wait to go back...
This was mine and my husbands first trip to Mexico. We had a fabulous time and were glad we picked Gran Bahia. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. It was nice to just hang out by the pool or the beach and relax. We did the Tulum and Xel-Ha excursion and had a blast. Dont get me wrong it was HOT, but a great trip. We are starting to plan our trip back for next year. We are planning on staying at Gran Bahia again.
