Overall great place to stay
The Portland was terrific and I would definitely stay there again. Service was friendly and attentive. They had upgraded us (for no reason) and our room was really nice and big, and VERY clean. There were a few things that were sort of a drag -- the bed was really hard and we were put in a first-floor room on the street -- which was very noisy. Service was terrific. Great area, and very close to the tube.
Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay
If you stay here, be sure to request a room off the street. Also, breakfast was incredibly average (OK, it was dull -- how many different kinds of corn flakes to they make anyways?) so do yourself a favor and dont do the continental breakfast.

Great location
The hotel is two blocks from the Russel Square Underground Station, one block from the Brittish Museum and squeezed between two squares (parks). We never ate at the hotel restraunts because there many great restraunts and cafes within walking distance. The room was beautiful and had its own kichenette, so we could make dinner in our own room. There was also a beutiful private garden.

Met out needs, price was right
Had a little trouble getting desk clerk to call taxi to take us to airport. A clerk from one of the "sister" hotels nearby showed up, he made the call, and it worked out.
