European feel in Puerto Rico
We were very very happy with this hotel. The hotel staff is very helpful, completely dedicated to maximizing the guests enjoyment, and they really do make this a very classy place. Hotel Miramar reminded me a whole lot of the urban hotels I stayed at when I was visiting Europe, but Miramar is easily 1-2 "stars" better than the places in Europe. Its in a pretty bustling, space-challenged, urban area, the rooms are a little dated but very cozy, the staff interaction is informal but focused, and it has great amenities like a surprisingly good free breakfast and a rooftop terrace. The two big downsides are 1) its not on the beach, and 2) driving and parking in the area around the hotel is not simple. Like I said, this is not a resort experience. Its in a typical urban area, where youll see a few street people, and theres a grocery store, a bar, and a couple of nice local cafes just across the street (Avenida de Juan Ponce Leon). But its not an unsafe area at all; we never felt threatened or concerned. If you get a car, good luck with the streets and streetlights around the hotel...but then again thats the case for most of Puerto Rico. Luckily, the staff manages your car for you (i.e. 24-hour valet service) so 2) isnt a big headache. We didnt visit the closest beach (Condado lagoon) since we had a car. If you have a car, its an excellent location. Its only a 5 minute drive/10 minute bus ride to Old San Juan, and pretty much right on a major highway.
Avoid Tainos Restaurant by the caves in Camuy (Lares). That place is a textbook tourist trap; if you try to eat there, you will leave with a lower opinion of the whole island of Puerto Rico.

LARGE ROOM! Great value and service.
We were very impressed with how large the room was. It had two double beds, lots of lighting, frig, microwave, sm table with chairs, large sofa chair with foot stool, tv cabinet, safe and a sufficient bathroom. The bathroom had some updates and needs a little more work. But over all it was a great value for the room, They had great service and tried to help in any way they could. We left our lap top at he airport and they helped us get it and they were willing to help get a lock off our suitcase that we had no key for. There is a very nice Sizzler around the corner and they have a fabulous restruant at the hotel. Our cab fair for four and 8 pieces of luggage was only $23. We would stay here again if needed. Lots of local shops close by. Great taxi service too.
