AMAZING location and views - but not posh
Was in Helsinki late Aug and stayed at the Palace for 4-nights. Several websites had listed this hotel as 4-star which it definitely is not! Our room was very plain (not bad, just simple and a bit rundown feeling); minor carpet stains, odd mounting of heated towell rack inside the shower - stuck out so far into the tub that I kept bumping into it and burning myself. That being said, the staff couldnt have been any nicer - super helpful and friendly. The free/included buffet breakfast was great and plentiful (EXCELLENT coffee) and the breakfast room has an unparalleled view of the Helsinki harbor. Also, we were upgraded to a harbor view room which is what would make me return to this hotel (or recommend it). We never tired at returning to our room and sitting on the balcony admiring the view of the harbor (and we could see the two main churches that delineate the skyline). One night we even opted for a "picnic" dinner of wine and cheese and meats from our balcony instead of spending a large sum on dinner in town. Also, the location was IDEAL -- just a block off the main Esplanade - one of the main areas of the city. Summary: for the price, and given our harbor view room, Id DEFINITELY stay here again - just know it is not a 4-star-type of room - but it was clean and more than adequate. Also, harbor view room is a must!!
Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay
The breakfast buffet was quite large and offered something for everyone. You could easily enjoy a very hearty meal and not be hungry again (except of course for an afternoon coffee and pastry) until dinner. You could easily save $15/20 per person a day that way.

Unique hotel, lots of history
Although my single-bed, shower-only room left something to be desired, Palace has a great view of the harbor and an incredibly helpful staff. The complimentary breakfast and tea/snack every day was an added bonus.
