Beware the ground-floor disco

My room was right behind the reception desk on the second floor and, unbeknownst to me, right above a bar/disco. I was happily ensconced in my bed, flipping through the HD DirecTV channels, when it started. The BOOM-BOOM-BOOM-BOOM of really, really loud music. At first I thought it was a car stereo blaring at the stoplight. When it went on and on, I figured out what was happening. Not only was the music unbelievably annoying, but at several different times during the night, there were drunk, screaming people under my window, a few of which sounded like they were in a fistfight. I don’t think I slept more than 30 minutes all night. Even though I had reservations to stay another night, I got up at 7 a.m., packed my bag, and checked out. Other than that--other than the room being basically uninhabitable if you’re interested in sleep--it was nice. High ceilings, nice furnishings, free continental breakfast delivered to your room (I left before mine arrived, so I have no comment on the quality of the food). The teeny, tiny coffeemaker was disappointing, as were the two packets of lousy coffee that were both decaf. It’s a handy location if you’re exploring the historic district, but when you book, ask for a room the highest floor. Maybe it’s quieter up there.

We’d choose The Independent again

We loved the location. It was an easy walk to historic sites, theater row, Rittenhouse Square and South Street. Only 2 blocks to subway for Phillies, Eagles games. Also, many pubs and restaurants in the neighborhood. Room was spacious, clean and comfortable. Only complaint: new club opened downstairs, which made for a noisy night. Staff did seem concerned and called (several times) to get music turned down. We trust that they will work to get this issue solved, as it isotherwise a lovely place to stay.

Loved this hotel!

This was a fabulous boutique hotel right in the heart of Philadelphia’s theatre district. We walked to all of the historic sites-Liberty Bell, Independance Hall plus to dinner each evening. Parking was across the street for $15 per night. Many restaurants close by with a lot of choices. Staff was friendly and helpful without being over the top. A basket of breakfast each morning was also a nice touch. Wine and cheese were served each evening at 6:00 pm in the lobby.

Traveler's tip on dining

Try Mercado just a few blocks away from this hotelfor dinner. It is a BYOB restaurant with delicious food.
