Good location and affordable

This hotel was clean and quiet. The location is good. However, be aware that unless you take a water taxi to the hotel there are several bridges to cross with a lot of steps to carry luggage over. The breakfast was on the okay side with mostly the standard Italian fare of pastries, cereal, eggs, juice, and coffee. Otherwise, it was a good deal for the money.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

When you get tired of Italian food there are some good Chinese restaurants nearby.

Hotel Basilea

My Mom and brother had a wonderful room. My daughter and I had a room smaller than our cruise stateroom, the plaster was peeling, and there was mold above the shower. Since it was the same price, then we got a bad deal. The hotel was in a nice location for getting around Venice. The day shift hotel clerk was extremely nice and helpful.

Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay

Close to the public water taxis. Easy to get to all the tourist spots. Easy pick up for the water taxi to the airport.

Value and location

It’s a great little place with a perfect location. Not the most luxurious, but it’s the right price.

Not Quite

Despite a friendly and helpful front desk staff...not someplace I would look to stay again. Continental breakfast on the light side. Rooms very cramped for the price. At least the bath room was in good shape. Get a good map to the hotel...300 meters from train station is as the crow flys!

Shabby Elegance

The staff was very friendly and the hotel is located near the train station and all the attractions. The spring mattresses are uncomfortable and squeeky. Everything echoes off the alleyway, so be prepared to get up early. I wouldn’t recommend it for more than a couple of days. If you arrive by train, walk to the station bridge where you will see a sign on the ground directing you to go across. Once you are over, there are other signs directing you.

Traveler's tip on dining

Within sight of the hotel is a bakery/coffee shop, a bar, and an Indian restaurant. Behind it are a bunch of other restaurants and gelaterias. If you can find it, there is a corner bar with the best meatballs in the world!

Worn out

Good location. We stayed in the Annex. Room was large and air conditioned, but looked like it had been furnished by Salvation Army. Wallpaper was peeling, holes in the ceiling and floor, and the sink leaked. Front desk personnel were nice and helpful. Breakfast staff left a lot to be desired. There was a portable air conditioning unit in room that worked great which was a welcome relief from the extreme heat and humidity outside.

cute room

I stayed for 1 night in a 2 twin bed room and loved my stay on the second floor across from the reception building. The room had rose motif bedspreads with matching roses handpainted on the desk and wardrobe. Chandelier for lighting and the ceilings were high -14 feet. Great view of vines climbing up the roof from my window. Very out of the way so it is a quiet part of Venice, however in the building itself noise insulation was difficult due to hard wood in the hallways. I brought ear plugs and it helped. Breakfast had croissants, tart, cakes, slices of ham, cheese spread and jellies. There were juices, yogurt and fruit. The receptionist knew every language there was. Good value.

Traveler's tip on dining

Traveler’s Tip: The gelato shop across the square from Palazzo Ducale (next to the Museum of Archeology) has wonderful flavors/price + good for lactose intolerant like myself. Have a gelato and sit on the steps and people watch.

Hang your hat.

This hotel has been renovated so the bathrooms are new tile and fixtures. The staff is very happy to help you in any way they can. The room is very basic and the size accommodates the furniture, not much more. If you are looking for a no frills hotel, a place to hang your hat, then this is the hotel for you. If you are looking for something a little fancier, then look on.

Quaint & Lovely

Considering the prices of Venice hotels, this was quite reasonable and included a continental self-serve breakfast. A very accomodating & friendly staff. We had a king size bed and the room, while not big, was quite adequate. It is right on a canal on Rio Marin. Easy to get to & buses & ferries are about 5-10 minutes walking.Very convenient, clean, and comfortable. There is also internet access for a small fee. Would definitely stay at the Basilea again.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

If you will be in Venice for a few days, buy the 24 hr ferry bus (ferravia) ticket (15 euros/person) as they are quite efficient and taxis can be expensive. If going to Murano, take the DM or 42 ferravia straight there. For getting to the airport, the #5 land bus from Pte Roma bus depot/station goes straight to Marco Polo Airport. Gondola rides are a little pricey but worth the experience. The money you save by using public transportation, you can use for the gondola ride.
