This hotel did not live up to my standards. The beach was the best part very white sand and ocean was amazing. The hotel itself needs a TON of updates. Most of the elevators did not work; the food was awful! The food in the buffet and most of the restuarants was almost unbearable to eat. Toyko has the best food by far and the restaurant that is right by the beach very good food. All the others were very bad food and the restaurants smelled and un-air conditioned. The room another thing to talk about. The room air conditioning was not COLD it was cool but not cold to refresh you. The room itself looked beat up and the balcony doors didnt look or shut right. We had ants in our bed one night and by our mini-bar even when there was no food out. the shower wasnt that clean looking and the beds not that comforatable. Took a very long time for your room to be made up. The best part of this trip was def. not the hotel; the beach was very nice though. the food made me sick to my stomach everynight.

They have a flying Trapeze!
The only reason I would recommend this place is the childrens pool is pretty great and the Flying trapeze is a lot of fun. The food was about as ho hum as expected, but we mostly just ate at the downstairs buffet. The room was okay, but there was not a bath tub and you could hear through the walls to the downstairs bar area. It sometimes made it harder to sleep with people screaming, talking loudly and partying all night. At the end of the trip the airconditioner went out so that was pretty miserable in the 100 degree heat. There were other hotels that looked a lot nicer on the other end of town closer to the Hard Rock and I bet they were near the same price. This place I felt was way over priced for what you got.. I would not go back to this hotel.

Best Trip I EVER HAD!!
Everything was great from the airport shuttle all the way to the end of my trip. I went with my girlfriend and we both enjoyed it. All the restuarnts are delicious and the pool, beach buffet, shows, and EVERYTHING!!!! I personally recommend it. Cant wait to go back...

went there for our honeymoon.. wasnt that great!!
we went there for our honeymoon and the staff at the hotel wasnt very friendly.. it took us one night 3 hours to get someone to look at our balcony door.. it was broke... we had a leak in the bathroom.. normally im not one to complain but, you would think that some could speak a little more english... some didnt understand it at all!! and besides the bad experience my husband and I had.. it rained like everyday... I just wouldnt recommend it to any newlyweds if you want it to be a romantic time and to be pampered.. BECAUSE YOU WONT GET IT HERE!!!

Nice Hotel with Some Customer Service Issues
The hotel is very nice...arge resort, with nice pools and a great beach. Rooms are nice...but make sure to get a view of the pool and/or the beach...our initial room was supposed to be a "garden view" but was actually facing some overgrown bushes around the staff entrance & outside security staff...awful! We had our room changed to a pool/beach view, which was great! The pools were very nice...the childrens pool was actually a lot of fun for our kids, who range in age from 8 - 11 yrs old. We spent a lot of time in and around the pool and on the beach. The bar staff & activities staff (i.e. trapeze, rock climbing, pool activities, water sports, etc) were a lot of fun and helped us have a great time! But, we were concerned about the lack of customer service in the restaurants and with some of the support staff. A few times when we asked questions, instead of saying "Yes, maam?" or "how can I help you?", we got "What?!". And, we never got those sodas we asked for!!! And, be prepared to deal with a bit of language barrier with some stafff, if you are not fluent in Spanish. Some high school Spanish will be helpful in asking for the bathroom, whats the time, or for soda (but you still may not get any...haha!). Overall, we had great time, because we made a commitment to have fun and we made the most of everything the resort had to offer!
Traveler's tip on dining
Breakfast & lunch near the pool/beach was a better option than the buffet. Make your reservations for the specialty restaurants as soon as you check-in. Our large group was given set dinner reservations, but split up at different restaurants and on different days. We had a hard time getting that straightened out...because everything was booked. So, we had to make a big fuss and complain before they fixed our reservation as a group.

Punta Cana is beautiful but resort was OK
Our overall family vacation to Punta cana was awesome. We stayed at the Barcelo Premium Resort. The grounds were beautiful and the staff were very nice. The rooms were not up to "premium". They smelled of musty mildew and the one day (out of 12) that we had rain we had a major leak in our bedroom. They fixed it by giving us extra towels to clean up the water so we wouldnt slip. The food was good at the buffet but better @ the themed restaurants. The only really bad thing about the resort is on the weekends(Fri.-Sun.) the hotel let the "locals" come in for $10 a day and eat, drink, and use all the facilities. They were very rude, pushy, and LOUD!!! Overall, we would definetley go back to Punta Cana but probably try a different resort!

We went on an excursion the 5th day we were there. We swam with "nurse sharks and stingrays"!! My 3 kids, husband and I had a great time! It was an expierence we will never forget!

I Could Had Been Less Stressfull
Personally, I would say that Im Dominican and I was dying to go to Punta Cana but the Hotel created a bad Image in my mind. First of all, my friend and I got to the hotel; it took us an hour in the line to get registered. After we registered they made us wait four hours to give us a room. When we got to the room the balcony door was broken, the AC was off and the room smelled too much. We called reception to get another room but we never got a call back. The restaurants were full already, so make sure you make the reservations before you get there. The third day, there was a storm; in seconds our room was floaded; all our belongings were wet; but they never changed our room. They went and cleaned it up. I would not recommend that you go to the Dico they have; there is no AC, unless you wanted to go to a Sauna. In Conclusion, it seems that in reception; they do not know the meaning of Customer Service because everybody else was really nice.

In order to have fun, you should participate in all the activities that the hotel has; otherwise you are going to suffer pain because that is the only good thing they have after the restaurants and the beautiful beach.

Mixed review, but would probably go back
I just returned from a very nice week at the Barcelo Punta Cana. First of all, I have to mention that the restaurants are a pain. The food is great! But every morning you have to wait in a long line in order to get a reservation and they always tell you that only 1 or 2 of the 6 restaurants are available, even though when you go to the restaurants at night they are almost empty. The service at the hotel and the bars for Americans was not the best. We got good service only when we tipped well and they remembered us. Our room was good, one person in our group had a bad room though and complained and they upgraded them. Also the showers in the hotel are terrible. The water sprays out of the shower all over the floor and they never provide enough towels to mop it all up. We had to take them off the maids cart ourselves. The staff did not speak very good english either and it was difficult at times to communicate. I recommend breakfast at the little hut by the pool because no one goes there and I also recommend lunch at the sit down restaurant. They have great sandwiches. I didnt like the buffetts, but the sit down meals we had were great! Also the beach is spectacular and huge! And the view from our room was amazing. Overall, we had a great trip and I would return to this resort, but I wanted people to know about the downfalls of this resort as well.

MY 50TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION WAS MEMORABLE
Celebrating my birthday with my family at the barcelo premium punta cana was wonderful!!! The suite in bld.3 was so comfortable and spacious. Being in bld.3 is the ticket because you are in the hub of the resort, cappucino for breakfast every morning and happy hour at night. The bath rooms are large and plenty of towels. The living room futton was perfect for our daughter. Bld.4,5,6,&7 need work and attention to detail, towels were hard to come by in a timely manner, which made my sister very upset. They tried to rectify the situation but it seems like those areas that you pay less for are not taken care of. The pillows in bld.7 were terrible it was like sleeping on cotton balls. I loved the food in all the restaurants and the service in most places was good. The beach and ocean were my favorite thing to do with the angle fish swimming around my feet and my pina colada waiting for me by my wonderful husband!!!! My family and i had a wonderful time and i would go back any time. Just remember to bring immodium AD because we all had blinky stomache problems.
Dont over pack, bathing suits,cover-ups and sun dresses and 2 pairs of slacks for men for fine dinning. bring immodiumAD, bring drink containers for soda&drinks. Just have fun and relax!!!!!

i was very impressed
this hotel was a great hotel. the people were very nice and attended to our every needs. i really enjoyed all the different types of events that they had for you to do. the only thing that i really didnt like and it wasnt a big deal was the check in... they only have like 2 people checking in a lot of people. it took us like 30 minutes for us to get our rooms, but other than that our stay was great!!!!!!

it was okay
It was aggrivating because noone really understood english. The food wasnt really impressive it was decent but that not good. There wasnt really much entertainment for adults its more for children or a family resort not good for couples.
take food with you just incase. Take a lot of immodium with you. You will need it.

Honest assesment of this resort
First off, I spent alot of time reading the reviews of this resort before booking my vacation. I did have some concerns based on what I read but felt I would give it a shot due to the affordable price. I arrived at the resort on 7/13 with a group of 16 friends and family members. From the first minute we got there the service was horrible.(Only 2 people working the front desk) It took us 6 hours to get a room after arguing with them that we requested to be in the renovated section. Trust me, we looked at the unrenovated section and it was not very impressive.,(dirty & moldy). Several of the groups in my party had leaks in their room and the a/c did not work.The food at the buffet was terrible. Good luck trying to get a reservation in one of the resturants. The Italian resturant was good. We had a reservation @ the Paris resturant one night and left after waiting over 2 1/2 hours to be served. The staff is not friendy at all. I can go on and on. The beach and hotel grounds were beautiful but that is about it. Oh, I forgot to mention the vendors that the hotel allows to set up in their lobby and grounds. They are very agressive and phisically grab you to buy their merchandise. It is a shame because the resort could be spectacular if the staff was better trained. I would not recommend this resort. Spend a litle extra and enjoy this beautiful Island.

dont listen to any review this hotel is great
it was our first time in the barcelo, and we were a little be concernd with all the bad review we had read about this hotel and after we got there no matter where we go in the hotel every one of the staff were very friendly it was like no matter what every one did their best to made sure our stay there was very pleasant. from the front desk ,pool attender, bartender,it was a very pleasant time , our room has a great view to the ocean , the food no matter where we ate was very good and so many activity to do that our stay there was an enjoyable experience... very very fun place ...
bring your kids they will have as much fun as you will too

not impressed
was very nice resort on the outside..but the rooms were dingy and the sheets were always smelly with a musty odor. room service took forever to clean up the rooms and we had to wait almost 15 minutes to get clean towels one day.

Never going back..If I wanted to sleep with bugs Id go camping
Ok, First of all, Im a world traveller and have stayed in many 3 1/2 star places...all being better than this. The resort itself is beautiful mainly the grounds and restaurants. The rooms are stay at your own risk. The 1st room I stayed in had a broken air conditioner that made the room smell like mold and made the pillows and blankets wet. The bathroom was gross and had stains in the toilet. We changed rooms the 2nd day and it was better except that there was an insect problem...ants and mosquitoes everywhere. Id still take the insects over the mold though. Good luck getting towels or any other form of room service, we never did...I resorted to stealing towels from the maid stands. The electricity goes out about 3-4x a day and comes back on after 15-30 minutes. That also means no water and no back up generator bc I was in the shower one time during a blackout and almost fell getting out in the dark. Guest services are probably the nastiness people on the whole Punta Cana beach, nasty, lazy, disorganized,etc. Just a few of the traits. The restaurants are decent at most. Roma was good and so was Tokio but there were roaches in the second. I was told bugs are normal in the hotel by the manager,Annette, because of the humidity. The pool and beach are beautiful. The theater is beautiful. But other than that this place was horrible. It ruined my whole outlook on the DR and will never go back there either.

Great deal for the Price!!
Beautiful property. We were in the newly renovated rooms and they were gorgeous. The only thing i would change in the room was that the showers do not have doors or curtains, it is a glass partition that only comes halfway so water gets on the floor. The food was pretty good, however we are not picky eaters. There were a lot of international choices at the buffet and i think most anyone could find something. We went to Tokio and it was awesome! Service was hit or miss but mostly good. There were a select few employees who had very bad attitudes and only wanted to serve the spanish speaking guests but there were a ton of friendly, helpful employees. The language barrier wasnt too bad. Beach and pool were wonderful, clean, couldnt have hoped for better. We didnt have our son with us but we will bring him next visit, it was very kid friendly. All in all, for the money, its a great vacation! We will be back!
Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay
If you want to eat at the restaraunts (other than the ones they pick for you) you must make reservations the day you arrive. They fill up quickly. Also, while the buffet was good, there is a place (forgot the name) by the "quiet" pool that you can have lunch, it is a sit down rest. with beautiful ocean views and great great food! Be patient with the employees, you have to remember it is a different way of life, more laid back, so go with the flow and you will have a great time!

Not bad for the cost, would go back
Pleasantly surprised. hotel not five star but good. Service good, people friendly, tour guides helpful. you have to bargain with them. front desk always crowded. Rooms descent. no funky smell. one of the beds was caved in. Food was not as good, buffet was ok for breakfast only. Tokyo, Paris, Conoco were good but making reservations in advance a must ,I ate/drank something because I came back with a crazy stomach ach, bring pepto bismol just in case. drinks were kind of week, but if your there for a while you see the same bartenders and a little tip goes a long way. nightlife wasnt spectacular, club at the hotel was ok, thers a club in town, didnt go but heard it was really good. Dont be afraid to leave the resort if your with a group, obviously by your self I wouldnt recommend, activities were good, did snorkeling, tubing, horse back riding and zip lining, had lots of fun. shows were ok, something to do, they have rock climbing and trapezing also. vendors at night are aggressive. For my first time out of the country my trip was great. 5 days is not enough. Go ahead and b friendly with the locals and vacationers, youll get useful info that way. We met some really cool people. would def recommend this hotel, mabe try soemthing new my next time in DR. Id give it a 3.5/4.0. If you have any questions email me

be sure to make reservations, try all the different restaurants as there were a few we didnt get into. if you burn easy bring sunblock, i tan really well and after the first day of sunblock i stopped using it plus it was cloudy most of my time there.

Somewhat impressed
Cons, hotel service was for the most part awful. first night there there was a debacle with our dinner reservations and they told us all the restaurants were full, they were clearly far from full. We ended up having to eat at the buffet which was awful. Any reciew you read that says there is no language barrier is sadly mistaken. It was very hard to communicate with the hotel staff. They play very loud Latin music all day long at the pool. At night they have vendors that set up tables who are extremely agressive.Front desk has two people working there if that when the line waiting for service has about fifty people in it. You have to request a renovated room for a fee, or they will put you in a room that smells like mildew and a bed that caves in in the middle.Drinks very weak. Pros, hotel was in very clean, updated room very comfortable and clean. Beach was gorgeous. Restaurants (Tokyo/Roma) were amazing. Excursions were great. Definetely recommend the day trip to Catalina Island for snorkeling.

Dont believe what you here about how you shouldnt leave the resort. The day trips to Catalina and sport fishing (although we caught nothing) were great. unless you want to sit on beach or at pool all day hotel really offers nothing. We left the resort for a dinner one night too, which was great. Perfectly safe.

Not too Shabby...
We went this past May and it was our first time to the DR. The hotel was alright but the room was very nice. The entertainment was severely lacking. They DJ played the same songs ALL DAY LONG by the pool (Michael Jacksons greatest hits and Techno). The nightly show was pretty good but that is it for the night life... no one went to the casino or club on site. The food was alright for breakfast and lunch, but the reservation dinners were absolutely amazing. All of them require nice clothes and offer 4 course menus at no additional cost. It was a fun time by the beach but I dont think we would go back... its nothing against the hotel but we like a good entertainment staff and that was the deal breaker for us.

Make reservations at Rome, Tokyo, and the Tex Mex restaurant at check in. They are amazing and you will definitely be missing out if you skip them.

Not very good at all
The rooms, food, and service in the hotel was not good at all. The front desk was always busy because they have 2 people working there at a time with 50 people waiting in line. Also, the people at the front desk to the activities personal were rude and was difficult to talk to them. The rooms smelled and the showers didnt have a shower door which flooded out bathroom everytime we showered. The food was all the same in every where you went to eat and the service at each of the places took at least 1 and half hours to finish your meal. Overall it was not a good experience and i would not go back

Great Hotel!
I went with my girlfriend for a week vacation. At first, we were given a terrible room! The shower was gross, and the room hadnt even been cleaned properly. As well, it was not the ocean view that I had paid extra for on expedia. All it took was one complaint, and I was given the room I paid for immediately. What a difference... The room was pristine and looked brand new. The shower was beautiful, great tv, nice bed, beautiful view... the best! The hotel features shows every night, which are great and in a brand new theater. There were also great activities hosted by the pool daily. When you arrive, book your dinner reservations for the entire trip! They can be hard to come by. Shows start at 9:30, so have reservations that allow you to be finished by then. The best lunch is near the pool with the fountains and has restaurant menu style ordering, not buffet. That is a hidden gem.

At the airport, dont give your bags to anyone, they just want tips. Arrange for transportation before your trip. cabs can get pricey. Stay at least a week! We went for 6 days, and that was not enough IMO.

had a great time
We had a wonderful vacation. The only downside was all the rain but it was nothing a few rinks couldnt handle. The worst part about the resort was the language barrier even a small knowledge of spanish will help. But the restaurants were nice and different, we had the dominican and the frencha dn both were very good. The buffet was hit or miss, its nothing we as americans are use to because its not processed but the food was very good if you tried different things and you cant go wrong with the pasta bar. overall we had a great stay and would go back

Not that impressed
I went to the Barcelo with three other girls (we are all 26). The service was incredibly slow so plan on long waits at the reception desk and the bars. If you speak Spanish and tip a lot, youll get more service. The most frustrating aspect is the dinner options. They automatically sign you up for a few nights but you dont get any choice in the restaurant or time. Its nearly impossible to change things later. The beach and pools were beautiful though. Oh, and calling the US is difficult but there is an Internet cafe to use. All in all, I will not return. I would recommend the Divi All Inclusive in Aruba though!
