Nice, simple but confortable place to stay

Stayed there for the second time, units consist of large living area with a full kitchen, smaller seperate bedroom, bathroom clean with a shower only, private balcony. Some of the rooms don’t seem to be used, construction in some areas of the hotel. Furniture/amenties looked a bit used, but workable, but if you consider the absolutely reasonsable room rates, this is quite acceptable. We will definitely stay there again.

Hotel Needs Major Help

No refridgerator door handle, the fridge also was also very noisy it was louder than the AC, no rack in oven after calling the front desk took 3 hours to get one, meanwhile we had lasagna waiting to be cooked. No door locks on the bathroom, uncomfortable with 3 other adults, the remote control didn’t work for both TV’s in the room, some of the blinds in the room were missing needless to say the bright lights outside kept us awake at night. They charge you a resort fee with no resort amenities, their 1 free complimentary breakfast is stale danish, stale muffins. The Tiki Bar was the only plus about this place. Will not be coming back.

functional and close to everything

The hotel is older, it is functional and in adequate repair. The ajoining rooms have 2 doors to eachother, one door has it’s own hallway... a little freaky if you aren’t sharing rooms. First come first searve carport parking. A great place to bring a boat as there are slips attached to the hotel. The pool is warm and clean, the bartender is a bit old and deaf. The live music was fun. They use old fashioned keys for the doors.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

a mile from publix and a liquor store. less than an hour from key west. full size kitchen. Bring your own dish soap.

Average, but good value for the money

If you’re looking for a place to crash, this hotel is well-priced. Amenities were average, the room was fine.

What a Dump!!!

I am actually writing this review during my first night at this "resort". I couldn’t believe that they had the nerve to charge a "resort fee". They said the "resort fee" included wireless internet access which was slow. I ended up logging on to someone else’s wireless router, thanks that that someone that got screwed into staying here also. I wouldn’t even recommend this hotel to the homeless.

Needs a little improvement

Overall our trip was fantastic, never even turned on the TV. Comfortable, homey feel in the condo. However, the pool "had a leaK’ according to the hotel staff, and they weren’t apologetic or offer alternatives. Your trip is all what you make of it!

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

You are right next to the grocery store and have a full kitchen at your disposal! This makes breakfast and lunches more convenient.

I would go back

because, other than finding the A/C window units noisy, the other qualities of the room were very nice. We stayed in a Villa which was larger than some apartments I’ve seen! Our balcony overlooked the deep water docks, which we might bring our boat to next time. It’s a good recommendation for a longer, sport oriented and economical vacation. The spacious and fully stocked kitchen made it easy to prepare meals and relax after a fun day in the water. Front desk staff were courteous and helpful.

Traveler's tip on recreational activities

If you have a boat, ask for the marina behind the villas. A large family reunion rented a few villas and had their boats tied up behind the units... they fished all day, and cooked up the catch that night. Made me think I’d like to try all that too.

Nice place to stay...condo style

I stayed in a condo style suite at Sombrero and was very pleased. It was clean and efficient, and I enjoyed the kitchen/living area because I was staying more than one night at the hotel.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

Check out the Dolphin Research Center. It’s nearby and the most fun and educational experience you will ever have down there!

Great location

Great location, fair price, close to stores, walk to restaurants, nice suites, basic but nice, 2 color tv’s, staff was excellent, included continental breakfast OK (no protein food), elevator, nice pool, BUT no handicap bathrooms, walk in shower with bar, but bring your own toilet helper or get one at the Kmart within 1 mile.

Traveler's tip for business travelers

kitchen is fully equipped but barely. Bring in extra coffee, tea, sugar etc...they had ice trays, I brought some instant oatmeal and hard boiled eggs to supplement the continental breakfast supplied poos side. Fruit supplied in lobby. All in all not bad, not upscale, but I was satisfied.

resort = low income housing

couldn’t be more disappointed! the "pool, tennis, courts, and tiki bar" sit in the middle of a parking ! some of the rooms are rented monthly, so u’ll be passing by people in their living rooms! u can only see the marina from the outside corridor, from your balcony u can see, again: the parking lot!!! the lady in the front desk took her time talking to a friend on the phone before checking us in.... ovr all... it ruing the "cape feeling"....

I’d certainly return

Upon check-in, we were up-graded to a top floor older unit in a canal-facing mini-villa. with a view of small pleasure & fishing boats, and sunsets. While the hotel room was very clean, the kitchen was bare-bones minimal, so bring extra travel dishes, etc. The restaurant was quite good and very convenient. (There’s a Publix very nearby) There were many pleasant and playful, friendly Hispanic families and their children’s joyful chatter filled the pool area while the adults entertained after sunset in the villa areas. It got quiet after 10--11:00 p.m. All in all, an extreamly pleasant family resort or for seasoned international travelers who enjoy a bit of color.

Traveler's tip on recreational activities

All sorts of snorkeling charters available nearby (they provide equiptment & 4 hour boat trip for $25). A convenient Publix behind the resort. Great, gorgeous beach just south of 7-mile bridge on the left.

Not Impressed

I stayed at this hotel growing up. I was excited to go back and see the property. It turns out I was dissapointed and not impressed at all. There were dirty towels in the bathroom and no hot water to name a few. I don’t recommend this hotel.

Don’t do it!

Floors were sticky, something splattered on closet door, missing blind pieces so they wouldn’t shut all the way, no hairdryer-just the holder on the wall, TV remote wouldn’t work. Told the front desk, but the whole 4 days we were there, it was never fixed. Made them clean the room the first hour we were there. Will never stay there again!!

Fine room in depressing surroundings.

My daugher and I, veteran urbanites, walked raher than drove from the Sombero Resort to Highway 1 to find a reastaurant. We walked through what seemed like acres of dark, pothole riddled industrial park. While the hotel and rooms were perfectly lovely--spacious, clean, bright--the surroundings are totally unaesthetic. Our room was really an suite which could have accomodated 6--so it could be a great deal.

NOT IMPRESSED

There was no shower head. It took three days to get it. We had to shower with a pipe hanging out of the wall. The room could have been cleaner--clothing tags from previous guests were still in the closet. The beds were very hard. Had we been staying more than three nights, I would have changed hotels. They charge an amenity fee which we did not pay.

don’t bother

March 23, 2009: the furniture was old and dirty. the couch had cigerett burns on it and the coffee tables were both broken.there was and old moldy smell to the room. This may have been a great hotel 20-30 years ago, but not today. Wasn’t worth the money I spent.Look else where!!!

Just Say Yes To Sombrero!!!

We needed to get out of Ohio to find warm weather, sunshine & fresh seafood... Fast & cheap! The Sombrero is no luxury - But clean, convenient, safe & cheap it most certainly is. The staff was friendly & professional. Canal views from the room were beautiful & we enjoyed speaking with those who have their boats moored there. Laundry facilities were clean, well-lit & had a very secure feeling as my wife and I NEVER felt that creepy feeling one gets when they are in a bad place. The bathroom was clean & well-kept with new showers and a clean floor. Complaints? The mattress was worn out and the carpet is kinda gross, so do not think of having anyone sleep on the floor. Make sure you wear slippers while in the room & know that the kitchenware is not useable. Bring your own. The kitchen appliances are in working order. Advice? Skip Key West - The beaches are not as nice & it has become an unattractive commercial cliché. Stay in Marathon & enjoy local seafood! Drive 1.x miles to Sombrero Beach & enjoy clean, safe, well-appointed surroundings. Sleep, play, swim, enjoy!! You will find several bathroom facilities at the beach, beautiful areas for kids to play, a large volleyball area, local people enjoying their lives, a quiet police presence & all the beautiful Florida sun you can grab. Shop at Publix a short walk away & have breakfast at The Cracked Conch or the IHop & dinner at The Cracked Conch or The Castaway just down the street. We will be back again... Hopefully soon!!

Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay

Go to Marathon Key, Florida and stay at The Sombrero Resort & Marina... each night there costs less than dinner!!

Sombrero Resort

Friendly desk clerks, quiet atomosphere, inexpensive - that’s what I asked for... simplicity and it was comfortable for me. Grocery stores and Kmart very close. Pool was not heated, but the air was cool when I visited. Restaurant was not openened, as described.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

If you like to walk with nature, there’s a good museum right across the highway, called Crain Point Nature Center. Nice trail with bird rescue. (I think it was $11)

Sombrero DUMP

Okay, we got this hotel very cheap. I get that you can expect too much but how about a clean room? We had the do not disturb to eat lunch and the cleaners never came back. I had to LOL when I was checking out and another guest started complaining to the hotel mgr about their room being dirty. I could not imagine staying in this hotel for more than a night or two...DUMP
