Very close to the Fremont Street Experience.... Wonderful.... Don’t miss this...

The hotel is clean, old, but very good... A little far away from the Big Casinos, but for the price that Expedia gave to me is OK...

Decent Value

I thought the El Cortez was a decent value for the dollar. It is definitely old school vegas, like stepping back into the 70’s, which is probably when most of the furniture was last replaced. But everything was in decent condition and cleaner than alot of places I have stayed that have been open only 10 years. The property has been kept up over the years and if you want to stay on Fremont St. might be your best bet. The casino part is definitely where the older crowd in town hangs out, looked like mostly locals in the casino and most of those people looked to be in the over 50 crowd. The cafe was decent, not the cheapest place in town, but a good value, service was excellent, food was plentiful and good. The TV channel selection in the rooms is sparse and they charge for high speed internet (but I think all hotels in Vegas do). Make sure your lugage has wheels because it is a hike from the parking garage, to the front desk, to your room. I thought the neighborhood might not have been the safest, but there was always a security person around every corner, so I always felt at ease. They seemed to step up security on the weekends and even patrol the parking garage regularly.

Better than we expected

We stayed in a tower room, 14th floor, which was very spacious and comfortable. We had heard that the area was not great at night but we found it fine at 9 pm. Enjoyed the Freemont st experience a short walk away. It was easy to get a double decker bus nearby to get to the strip, so the hotel’s location is not a problem. And our room was very quiet. So it was very good value for us.

Not bad at all

The El Cortez is an affordable hotel that had pretty good service. The first room had a problem with the heating system, the second room’s heating system had to be looked at by maintenance, but was fixed. Overall it was a good choice for the money spent. The restaurant’s in the hotel had really great food. If you’re on a budget the El Cortez is fine.

Escaping the Strip

An easy walk to the Fremont Street Experience and numerous downtown casinos and shops, the El Cortez Hotel is always my choice when visiting Las Vegas. Just leave a little extra time to check in and out for your room. Clean rooms, comfortable beds -- for an excellent price -- tough to beat if you want to escape the mega hotels on the Strip, where just walking to the elevator can sometimes be a trip in itself. If you enjoy gambling on a limited bankroll, this is the place. I love the quarter chip roulette especially, but $3 and $5 blackjack is a treat too. And how about 40-cent Keno! And of course, many penny and nickel slots.

The nightly Fremont Street Experience doesn’t cost a penny. Besides the overhead music, graphics and lights, it’s a wonderful place for people watching. In addition, there’s usually a band playing an outdoor concert -- also free. Street vendors, pubs, cafes and shops are all reasonably priced.

Extremely Dissatisfied

I arrived to check in to my hotel room and was told that I would have to pay a $200 deposit, instead of the $100 deposit listed in the expedial rules section. I was not using a credit card and therefore had to pay cash upfront for the deposit. The front desk person told me that the deposit for the room I had reserved was more due to the room being new. I told the hotel staff that I would not pay the extra money and so they put me in a lower class room. My daughter contacted Expedia to get this issue resolved, customer service called the hotel to help me with this issue. Ida (front desk staff) was very rude to me when I tried to get her assistance with the issue. She refused to speak with my daughter when I asked her to so we could straighten things out. When she finally agreed to speak with my daughter she was very rude to her also. This problem was not resolved with the hotel. I would never recommend that anyone stay at this hotel, their staff is rude and not open to helping people who stay in their facility.

Will not go back !!

With such price level, the overall of the hotel is satisfactory. It’s good the hotel is within walking distance to Freemont St. But the bad is too noisy and the sounds from Freemont come straight into the room as the windows are not double glazed.

Great Value!

We had been to Vegas before, but this was our first stay at El Cortez.. We had a great time. And believe me, the quality of your accomodations can change that quickly. We were pleasantly surprised. The hotel is older, but our room was very clean, bed was comfortable, bedding and towels in good condition. Best of all, our room did not have a musty, smokey oder you would expect from an older hotel. Staff was kind and treated us like they were happy we were there. Bottomline, great value for the money and you are just steps away from the Fremont Street experience. We will be back.

Too far from the strip

This hostel is clean and cheap. The service is nice for the price. There is two bad points : - Too far from the strip. About 30 minutes by public bus (24/24 every quarter) - The atmosphere is not friendchip. This is just a hotel with a basic casino. No theme or swimming pool. I was too focused on my plane ticket, I should upgrade my hostel for only few bucks.

Very comfortable stay...

I thought my stay was wonderful! The staff was friendly and was helpful with our requests. We stayed in the Cabana Suites. The suite was a bit smaller than I thought it would be, yet roomy. I loved the look! It was very contemporary. Looked like a work of art! The new look attracts a younger crowd to the hotel. Also, I forgot my hair staightner in the hotel room and the hotel mailed it back to me for a small fee. The only thing that was a bit irritating was the smell of the casino. It’s a bit old and out of style but the hotel was clean and I had a comfortable stay!

Very Good Value

A clean comfortable room at an affordable price. My room was small with a nice powerful hot shower. Not much on the amenities side though the bed and furnishings are a grade above what you would expect in this price range. Particular kudos to the housekeeping staff who cared for the guest. There is plenty of parking and the area has low traffic for drivers. Fremont street has a nightly light and music show, live bands for free. Plus, there are often events like cultural fairs to enjoy.

Traveler's tip on recreational activities

For the nature buff, an hour north the mountains around Mt. Charleston are great for hiking and picture taking. It was 100 degrees in Las Vegas while there was snow still on the mountains.

Very impressed by the price and the location

Definitely will go back to this hotel if my next trip is a budget tour. We were well received, and the front desk staff were very helpful. Rooms were comfortable, clean and spacious. Hotel location is close to the Fremont Experience Street. We were given four fun booklets for casino spending, and we used the given amount of coupon cash for more than an hour fun, no big gain though. Also, we all received a welcome drink. After all, we spent a little for two rooms of two nights there. Good deal!!!

Great value

We checked in very late, and there were no problems whatsoever with the late check-in. The room was quiet and clean, with adequate soap/shampoo/towels. The beds were comfortable, too. This was a great value and I would definitely stay here again when we visit Las Vegas. We’ve fallen in love with the downtown venue!

Traveler's tip on nightlife

The hotel is right at the end of the Fremont Street Experience. This is perfect because you get the convenience but not the noise!

Poor Customer Service

Front desk staff are very unfriendly, unprofessional and slow. There were 2 staff members at the front desk at check in and check out but only one was helping guests. They allow their staff to count their cash drawer at the front desk instead of in the back office. Very poor customer service.

What a hidden Gem:0)

I enjoyed my stay at the El Cortez. It was located withthin two blocks of the Freemont Experience:0) Which made it convient to other casinos and local shops:0) The only down fall about the hotel is the bathroom was too small:0) They should consider making the bathroom a little bigger:0) Overall I had a good time there and would recommend for people to stay:0)

El Cortez Hotel and Casino

The room was great. For the price I paid, I can not complain. It is strategically located in the Fremont area, parking was convenient and safe. There were patrols in the parking area which made me feel safe. The room was elegantly designed and clean. Bathroom was especially nice. I will definitely go back there the next time I come back.
