King George Palace - Great location, Great service, wee bit pricey.

My wife and I went to Greece for our second anniversary and stayed at the King George Palace for 5 nights. It’s in a great central location for trekking about Athens on foot. There are great restaurants in pretty much every direction within a 10 minute walk or less. It’s also a very well known hotel, so if you do take a taxi it’s never hard to get back. The service was extremely friendly and helpful. I would recommend this place to anyone staying in Athens for a few days.

Nice, but...

Probably not best value. I was promised an Acropolis view room, but instead got a suite upgrade (which I had no use for) with a view to an ugly courtyard. What is nice is that while their onsite gym is laughable, they provide free access to an upscale fitness club around the corner, very nice. Breakfast buffet is also very good, though not the very best I’ve seen in other places. Overall, it is sort of luxurious, but not really worth the price.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

For nice drinks, go to Bartesera nearby. Other than that, of course, see the Acropolis and walk through the Plaka. The new Acropolis museum, btw, is in my opinion mostly interesting for its architecture, less for what’s in it.

Definitely stay here

This is in the perfect location. Athens is really gritty in some parts but this is in a safe location within walking distance to all the main sites. The hotel was beautifully decorated with a terrace. The staff was very friendly and helpful.

Traveler's tip

Hotel is gay friendly. My partner and I felt very comfortable there. I would recommend a side trip to Cape Suounion. It is a unique experience. Also the day boat cruise to 3 Saronic islands was fun but long. Hydra and Poros are adorable (I could of skipped Aegina.)

Excellent Elegant

When I think of excellence and elegance which are two hallmarks of places, things, people, and events I use as standards, the King George epitomizes those hallmarks.

Traveler's tip

Find a good Greek/English dictionary -not to speak it, rather to figure out what menus mean.

Best Hotel

Everything about this hotel is top notch--doorman, reservation desk, concierge, rooms, and service. Each room is like a jewel box--beautiful, yet efficient. The most comfortable bed I’ve encountered while traveling.

Traveler's tip

Unfortunately, probably not the right hotel for very elderly travelers with limited motion, as the bathtubs are difficult to negotiate getting in and out.

King George Palace II: Marvelous

This hotel exceeded our expectations. The staff was extremely accomodating and responsive to all of our needs and requests.

Traveler's tip on dining

Be aware of surcharges attached to your bill when dining in Greece. In some cases it can double. Avoid excess charges by taking food to go!
