Nice enough for a mid range, but too far from anything.
We were pleasantly surprised by the spacious and well equipped room. The staff were friendly and helpful, but the hotel location was a pretty long walk from anything other than the Palace (two blocks away). They do run a regular shuttle service which helps, but unless youre staying at the hotel for a wedding, get used to the idea that youll be walking a lot. Theres enough walking in Kyoto anyway so the extra shoe wear may not be appreciated at the end of a long day. The other thing I wasnt crazy about was the in-hotel restaurant prices. Probably recognizing that there werent many options locally and guests were unlikely to return to the center of Kyoto, they hiked the prices significantly. You can easily pay as much and more than your room cost for a set price dinner for two - even without alcohol. The closest we came was an uber expensive beer and the smallest martini you have ever seen (in a sherry glass, yes really) in the deserted cavernous bar, before we decided that our feet werent that sore after all. All in all, a reasonably priced mid range hotel with comfortable rooms. A bit dated with expensive in-hotel dining, but okay if you dont mind the hike and/or taxi rides.
If money is not too much of an issue and you want the one-off best experience in Kyoto (or Japan), stay at a traditional Japanese Inn - a Ryokan. They are expensive, but in my mind, worth every penny if youve never been before (or probably wont again). Just one night is all thats needed to make you feel like youre a visiting shogun. The included Kaiseki dinner is fabulous, though a bit tricky for western tastes. If you plan to stay in one, its worth taking time to read-up about the ritual and customs so to avoid a potential faux pas or two. Note that this is one of the few places where you will be expected to tip (generously) the house keeper.

would go back (better for the 35y + group)
the hotel was excellent offering great service at a great price. location at first seemed to be away from the action... this turned out to be a good thing. public transport is very easy around kyoto so you wont miss anything.
