could not wait to pack

i was given a room inthe basement and when i complained they advised that there were no other rooms and that many people prefer the basement rooms. the rooms were below the sidewalk and if you dared to open the blinds you were in full view so that in the am you were staying in a box. front desk was incredibly rude. i paid a a 4 star price for a 1/2 star room. it would have been impossible to find a less desirable room in all of portland

Traveler's tip for business travelers

expedia was terrific in airing my complaiints to management and trying to fix the situation.

Fantastic

While this is the only hotel I’ve ever stayed at in Portland, I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone staying in the city for fun. It is exactly in the center of Portland’s old port. Added to that is the fact that the hotel lies in a restored late 1800s armory, which should excite anyone with even a minute interest in history. The beds are comfortable and the windows afford views of the various activities always going on in the district. There is also a spa located on the lower floor. In short, if you’re going to stay in the old port, stay at the Regency.

Historic Hotel in Fabulous Downtown Location

My husband and I spent the night here on our way to Freeport. Wonderful old hotel, great service. Only complaint is the hotel room doors slam shut, and that could be heard (as well as hallway talk) in our room early in the morning. This may have had something to do with our room’s location in a "corner" flanked by other rooms. Incredible location in the middle of hip downtown Portland--you can walk to wonderful restaurants, nightlife, the harbor. Would definitely stay there again!

Traveler's tip on dining

Streeter & Co. for awesome fresh gourmet seafood.

Overall very nice and very comfortable

The only complaint we have regarding our stay at the hotel is that, at night, the lighting in the room was poor. We both enjoy reading in bed before we go to sleep and found that it was extremely difficult with the low wattage bulbs in the lamps. Please consider upgrading your wattage. Otherwise, very nice stay!

Best experience in Portland!

We arrived at the hotel and were immediately greeted outside with valet parking and help with our bags. We settled into the hotel and then went out for a while and came back to our beds turned down and chocolate on the nightstand! What a treat! The next morning we had coffee waiting outside our door! I have stayed in many hotels, and this was the best yet. I will most definitely stay here the next time we are in Portland.

Great location, clean

Pros: Great location for walking the city, friendly staff, clean room, updated bathrooms (I read some reviews that stated they needed renovation); Cons: Older TV with poor quality reception, no system for ordering movies on-demand, our room had a skylight only (no windows)

Traveler's tip on dining

Two favorite stops: Old Port Wine Merchants (owner was extremely friendly and helpful) and Ribolita (Italian restaurant)

The best location for exploring the Old Port

There is no better place to stay if you are interested in experiencing the Old Port. Excellent, friendly service that had an answer to all of my questions. Nice room, tall ceilings, good view of the street. Most importantly, the Regency captures the elegance and quaint New England feel of the Old Port. I will go back.

Great hotel in Portland!

This hotel was such a gem in a great location. The hotel is a unique brick building that was once an armory. The room was super comfortable with great bedding and linens. I went to the spa for some services and that was wonderful as well. The staff was friendly and went out of their way to make my stay a great one. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone visting Portland.

A little stuffy

This hotel has plenty of amenities and the staff was pleasant. However it seemed a little too stuffy for a casual trip.

The Regency in Portland- A MUST!

Hotel was amazing, right in the heart of downtown and all the bars/restaurants and shopping. We had a basement room which was nice and clean, but would have prefered to be on a higher floor. Our bed was amazingly comfortable and the free coffee delivery at 8am is a nice little extra. Valet parking available for a very reasonalble price.

Traveler's tip on dining

You need to eat at Fore St. restaurant (just a block from the Regency. Make sure you make your reservation far in advance. Also a must, brunch at MIMS.

Great Location

This hotel is in the heart of Old Portland near the water and does have great service. I’d give it a 5 but for the size of our room. It was small, but certainly serviceable. The Armory Bar, by the way, is very nice for either watching the TVs there or sitting in a quieter corner and enjoying a cocktail.

Great Location

enjoyed our stay very much. Room on the small side but lovely furnishings and comfortable beds. Also very quiet. Staff helpful and courteous. Food a bit pricey, but delicious.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

Were able to take long walks around the "Old Port" area. Many things to see and do only blocks away. Location means alot to this hotel.
