Would go back
The hotel was nice and in an excellent location. My only complaint is that the air condition blew cold air directly at the bed. I was freezing while it was on, but I also would rather be warm than cold, so ignore what I say if you prefer to be cold. We were greeted with a bubbly drink in a champagne glass. We went to our room and there was a romantic netting around the bed. The room was well equiped with a fridge, coffee maker, extra space with a table and chairs. Definate recommendation from us!
Traveler's tip on local attractions
Dont take the city tour through the hotel. They drive you to the place to hook up with the other tourists and then drive you back near the hotel and you take a walking tour. It is might easier and significanly cheaper if you walk to the fort (1 block) and get a guide to give you a private walking tour. We paid $25.00 for the city tour and could have taken a private tour for $20 for both of us.

Not Impressed
Holdelpa Caribe Colonial was recommended to us by a friend, and we looked forward to staying at a small boutique hotel during our stay in Santo Domingo. However, the rooms were extremely small, way smaller than expected. The elevator is only big enough for 2 people, or one person with one bag. The sun deck is more like a storage area. The pictures posted look much nicer than the actual hotel. We left after two nights because of custimer service issues. It appears the hotel gave our travel information to a local travel agency. If you are staying in Santo Domingo for one or two nights, then the hotel would be ok because it is in the Colonial Zone. But the Colonial Zone is a tourist trap with too many street vendors, hustlers, and restaurants with inflated prices for tourists. We had a much better time staying at a hotel on the Malecon, where we were able to walk out the hotel in peace and eat well at cheaper and nicer restaurants.

Nice place
Front desk staff was a "godsend". They provided me with walking directions to many places where bargains could be obtained such as the "Mercado Moderno" and "La Sirena". Also highly recommend restaurant "Hermanos Villar" on Avenida Independencia and calle "Pasteur". Many locals eat there because the food is good and the price is very economical.
Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks
although the hotel is situated in the "conde" area, one can find many great deals on gifts and souveniers from the "Mercado Moderno" located on avenida mexico. (which is only a few blocks) from the hotel. The front desk of the hotel was extremely useful in directing me to many locations nearby.
