The show begins with theSanghyang trance dance. This dance is meant to exorcize evil spirits that may cause sickness and death in a village. Smell the incense drift through the air as a choir begins chanting and praying to put the dancers into a trance. When this happens, the dancers are said to be possessed by the sprits of the gods, and they hauntingly begin dancing in perfect unison with their eyes firmly shut.
TheKecak dance uses a group of at least 50 men sitting in a large circle around a blazing torch—known as the monkey dance because of the cacophonous rhythms and sounds these men produce. This “choir” dances and acts both as scenery and musical accompaniment for the actors and narrator, who spellbind the audience with an epic tale of kings and queens, ogres, and mystic monkey people.
For the finale, you’ll be transfixed by theSanghyang fire dance. In this dance, heaps of glowing coconut shell embers are spread around the stage. A man on a “horse” (represented by a hobby-horse of palm leaves) dances to enter a trance-like state, filled with calm and courage. Watch as the dancer begins snorting and neighing, trampling and scattering the burning-hot coals, and walking through and kicking the embers as if they were as cool as ice.
