The artisans of Batubulan greet you with their famous “door-guardian” statues. Gaze on as men sculpting slabs of soft volcanic stone turn rock into striking characters of every kind. While there, you’ll be entertained by the lively Barong Dance. Extremely popular amongst visitors, this dance tells a traditional story of the battle and balance between good and evil. With ornate costumes, sacred monster-like creatures, beautiful dancing, and a compelling epic tale, this dance is sure to please, as well as give you a glimpse into Balinese culture.
Drive on through tropical countryside to the village of Mas—known for the artisans who turn wood into fine art. Historically, woodcarvers produced pieces exclusively for royal and religious purposes. But now, these intricate carvings are also created for public enjoyment and commerce. In Mas, where many masters of this tradition reside, wander the shops and view groups of apprentices and teachers all around the village as they perfect their craft and transform a simple piece of wood into something almost magical.
Pay a visit to Goa Gaja (Elephant Cave). Dating back to the 11th century, the entrance to this cave has been sculpted into a fierce creature as mysterious as the cave’s forgotten origins. Drop by Kintamani to take in the lush panorama of the surrounding hills and Mount Batur, set inside a volcanic crater basin.
Stop at Bali’s preeminent center for fine arts, dance, and music—Ubud. Once popular amongst backpackers, artists, and bohemians, these days you may spot famous names amidst its bustling sidewalks, five-star hotels, and monumental mansions.
Your last stop, Celuk, glitters with its own fame as a town for unique and beautiful gold and silver pieces. Browse the many shops that line its streets and find a bargain on original and stunning bracelets, rings, necklaces, and everything else that shimmers.
