Unlike neighboring volcanic islands, Barbados is the result of coral building up on sedimentary rocks, a process that began centuries ago and is still continuing, as can be witnessed in the barrier reefs' huge barrel sponges, soft corals, and calcified gorgonians. Most diving takes place on the west and south coasts, which are sheltered from the trade winds. Available dive spots include:
Carlisle Bay: The only natural harbor in Barbados. Five wrecks lie in 25 to 40 feet (8 to 12 meters) of water.
Dottins Reef: A popular spot, with coral, barracuda, turtles, and hundreds of schooling fish.
Cement Factory: Actually the cement factory's pier. Species frequently seen include lobsters, sea horses, frog fish, arrow crabs, and scorpion fish.
S.S. Stavronikita: A 365-foot (111-meter) WWII freighter with intact cabins and passageways. Diving depths of 100-plus feet (31-plus meters). For advanced divers only.
