Ready to venture outside the city? This 8-hour tour commences by crossing the Bogotá Plateau, making its way through the residential district to the town of Zipaquira. After traveling through a large salt-mine tunnel, you arrive at the impressive Underground Zipaquira Salt Cathedral. The church's altars, atriums, and 14 small chapels have all been carved directly into salt rock walls—admire these works up close as you wander through the cathedral's serene interiors.|
Afterward, enjoy lunch at a restaurant in Zipaquira, well known for its potatoes made with salt from the nearby mine. Savor one of Bogota’s most traditional dishes, an Ajiaco soup made from three different types of potatoes, accompanied by avocado and chicken.
Next, your tour stops at Lake Guatavita, home to the gilded legend of “El Dorado.” This area is thought to be an ancient ceremonial ground of the “Muiscas,” an indigenous Colombian culture. Legend has it that the Zipa, tribal king of the Colombian highlands, would cover his body with gold powder and submerge himself in this pure mountain lake. At the same time, his subjects would throw gold figures and emeralds into the lake in tribute to their gods. The legend of El Dorado underwent several transformations, enticing European explorers for two centuries with dreams of untold riches.
