Begin your day tour on Doi Sethup mountain with a trek to Doi Pui, a mountainside Hmong tribal village. Acquaint yourself with the local tribe and its culture where the villagers still wear traditional Hmong clothing and offer their locally made wares for sale.|
Built in 1962, the royal family of Thailand’s winter retreat is your next stop. Known as Phuping Palace, this impressive residence is closed to the public when its owners are in town, but the fragrant rose and other gardens are well worth a wander.
Your journey then takes you to Chiang Mai’s most important Buddhist temple. Just over 300 steps lead you to one of the city’s best viewpoints—after which the temple was named. With an origin lost to legend, this 14th-century temple draws countless Buddhist pilgrims and tourists throughout the year to its towering golden stupas.
Back in town, sit down to a filling Thai- and Western-style buffet lunch before a visit to Roi An Phan Yang—an exhibition house where local artisans display their masterfully-carved wooden objets d’art. Board a horse cart or tram for a personalized tour around Wieng Kum Kan. Recently unearthed in 1984, this ancient fortified city was abandoned and forgotten over 700 years ago just before Chiang Mai became a capital city. Almost 20 temple sites have been uncovered and await your discovery.
