A scenic morning drive from Chiang Mai brings you to your first stop, the Thai Elephant Conservation Center. Subsidized by the government, the center provides a refuge to elephants as well as a training program for locals and tourists to become mahouts, or elephant caregivers. Watch a demonstration of these incredible animals’ talents.

Journey on to the Lampang Province and Lampang Luang Temple. Built in the 15th century on the site of an 8th-century fortification, Lampang Luang remains enclosed by citadel walls today. Untouched by modernizing “improvements,’ the temple retains an ancient feel and its 150-foot (45-meter) chedi, covered in copper and bronze, has developed a natural blue and green patina over the centuries.

Enjoy a Thai- and Western-style buffet lunch at a local restaurant before traveling to the city of Lampang, also known as Meuang Rot Ma, the Horse Carriage City. Clop through the streets of the city as you sit back in a horse-drawn carriage. Continue on to the city’s most important temple—Pra Kaeo Tao Temple. The 165-foot (50-meter) gilded chedi once housed Thailand’s important Emerald Buddha.

As the day continues, stop to wander the grounds of Phra That Hariphunchai Temple. Dating back to the 9th century, this temple is said to possess a lock of Buddha’s hair and one of the largest gongs in the world. Pass by the Queen Jamadhevi Monument, dedicated to the first queen of an empire that took her namesake. Your return trip to Chiang Mai carries you along roads lined with rubber trees.
