Rumi Darwaja welcomes you to Lucknow. Built in 1784 to create employment during a famine, this massive gateway stands 60 feet (18 meters) tall. It is said to be an imitation of one of the gates of Constantinople. Pass by the arch and onto the Chota Imambara. The golden dome and surrounding minarets lend this mausoleum a stately elegance. In front, 2 downsized replicas of the Taj Mahal flank either side of a large rectangular reflecting pool. Inside, crystal chandeliers and colored lamps sparkle and catch the sunlight pouring through the fine Belgian glass.|
Your tour moves onto Bara Imambara, a large complex housing a mosque, gateways, a courtyard, and a summer palace. The entrance hall is approached through 2 impressive triple-arched gateways. It is one of the largest halls of its kind, with the ceilings soaring over 50 feet (15 meters) high without the use of columns. Part of the inner structure is a labyrinth of hundreds of narrow stairways and passages. Meant to ward off intruders, the corridors are complete with 489 identical doors, dead ends, and fatal drop-offs.
Walk through the Chowk area, known for its delicious sweets, silverwork, and perfume. This is also the best place to find Chikan embroidery, for which Lucknow is famous. Pass by the Residency to witness the damage it sustained during the conflict between the Indian Freedom Fighters and British troops in 1857. Before reboarding the train to Delhi, stop at the beautiful Chunhat Khoti, built by Asaf-ud-daula.
