Disembark your morning train from Delhi and begin your full-day tour at Gwalior Fort, one of India’s most famous fortresses. Rising 35 feet (10 meters) tall and 2 miles (3 km) long on a steep hill, the fort has withstood the onslaught of many warring dynasties. Over 1,000 years old, the still-vivid blue-tiled walls protect the 15th-century Gujari Mahal.|
Built as a testament of his love for his ninth wife, Raja Mansingh Tomar commissioned Gujari Mahal Palace. It is complete with a canal dug to supply her with river water from her tribal village home. Today, this well-preserved palace acts as an archaeological museum for rare antiques, some dating back to the 1st century AD. Also inside the fortress walls, find Man Mandir Palace, built in the early 16th century. Vast chambers with finely carved stone screens were once great music halls. Explore the colorful chambers for affairs of state and relaxation adorned with ornately carved animals, flowers, and human forms.
Travel beyond Gwalior Fort and onto Jai Vilas Palace, home to the current maharaja as well as the Scindia Museum. Thirty-five rooms of this opulent palace are open to the public to showcase the affluence of Indian royalty. Find Belgian cut-glass furniture, jeweled slippers, and magnificent chandeliers.
Stop last at Tansen’s Tomb and the Mausoleum of Ghous Mohammed. Tansen, a critical historical figure in Hindustani classical music, rests here. Enjoy the beautiful simplicity at this monument to one of India’s most revered musicians. Nearby is the sandstone mausoleum of the Afghan prince, Ghous Mohammed. Admire the hexagonal pillars and pierced stone screens that make rock appear as delicate as lace.
