Opened by Mahatma Gandhi in 1939, Birla Temple is the first tour stop. Built by a family of industrialists of the same name, its maroon, oblong towers (shikharas) reach a total height of 165 feet (50 m). Inside, find Geeta Bhavan, a hall adorned with paintings depicting scenes from Indian mythology.|
ISKCON Temple, built in 1998, is dedicated to Lord Krishna. Take in the classic and contemporary lines that create the temple’s combination of simple and ornate architectural styles. With its towers standing 90 feet (27 m) high, this temple can accommodate up to 1,500 people within its commodious hall.
Next, visit Baha'I Temple, probably the most recognizable stop on the tour. Popularly known as the Lotus Temple, after its half-opened, lotus-blossom shape, this icon is widely considered an architectural marvel. Its white, marble ‘petal" walls and unadorned interior reflect the ancient representations of the lotus as a symbol of purity and peace.
The grand and timelessly-styled Swaminarayan Akshardham Temple—the last and most recently built temple on this tour—opened in 2005. Built in an incredible five years, with 11,000 volunteers contributing over 300 million hours of labor, this truly beautiful temple serves as a center for the representation of India’s ancient architecture, traditions, and spirituality.
